N52 to S54 Swap?
Hey guys. I've wanted to convert my 09 128 coupe from automatic to SMG. I would do manual but I've never seen a 1 series with an SMG Trans.
Wanted to know if it's possible to put an smg transmission in with my n52 engine or do I need to swap the whole motor? If so, I was wondering if the S54 motors with the tranny (e46 m3) would do for the n52. Thanks Guys!

I mean it can probably be made to work, but i don't think it'd be ideal. I dont know much about transmission but usually you can get or have an adapter plate made to go between the tranny and the motor.
However that being said, if you're going through all that trouble, just drop in a motor and transmission of your choice. The full swap is easier than figuring out the transmission.. that being said it's still pretty intensive and expensive.

Have you actually driven an E46 M3 with SMG? They're horrendous.

Just buy an E46 M3 if you want a sport sedan with a S54. Putting a S54 in a 1er is a huge waste of time/money.
Yeah, they are pretty awful. The only real plus is that they can be easily and cheaply converted to manual.

I'd just... buy an E46 M3 if that's the drivetrain you want.

Certainly would be easier.
Then you get the rod/main bearing failure that the S65 is currently enjoying.

Dude it's a BMW, if you're not constantly worrying about broken Vanos bolt, premature bearing failure or leaks galore you're not living. If I become stupid rich I'm dropping e60 m5 motor in my Z. The bay is certainly big enough for it lol.

They also have their fair share of issues. My favorite of which is the injectors going buck wild and causing hydro-lock.

Any BM swap that doesn't involve an S85 is a waste of time
I kid, kind of. Though if you are actually serious about it - it really depends on what type of power you are going for. And if you are willing to live with a Motec or PROefi. If your goal is HUGE (four digit) power, the 54 is without question the motor of choice right now. Outrageously overbuilt from the factory, and takes very well to boost for such a high-revving NA platform. Edit: just realized I bumped a week old thread. Sowwy.

Everything is doable. It all boils down to how much resources you have ( $$ or partners), time, how legal and streetable you want it to be and what your goals are with the car. Having done a ton of heavy work to my car, I can say from actual experience that a job like SMG into a e82 is not worth it. The transmission doesnt warrant the work. Its not an upgrade. An s54 swap is not legal in CA for a street car. It will never CA BAR because the motor is from a platform older than the chassis. An S85 from a 2009 m6 is a legal e82 swap in CA into 2008 cars. The s85 is a relatively cheap motor because there is an abundance of them on the market as e60's have alumn chassis and total easy. If you do go S85, do note, wiring will be a nightmare ( if you care to keep it street like) and you will likely want to upgrade the front and rear axels, subframe, and LSD to e9x m3 ones. The S85 weighs about 100 more lbs than an n54 and even more than an n52 so the balance of your vehicle will largely change. The m3 axels will not only support the power but help with the weight distribution a bit. |

A stroker S54 would absolutely sing in your car. Not that an S65 is anything less than 10/10 on the awesome scale.

The S65 is a great motor for our chassis because it only weighs 15 more lbs than the n54. The m3 tranny adds weight too but it is in the center of the car and doesnt disrupt balance much. The s65 is lighter than the s54 even. If I were to stroker anything, it would be the s65 but honestly the crazy is a beast with just FBO and a tune. My car currently weighs 3250.

Just realized
What ever made the z4 s54 work With the console gauges and other systems should make the s54 work in an e90 e82 platform |
