Good times @ The Tail of the Dragon
I used to live very close to this glorious place...Now I'm 1200 kms away and only there visiting once a year. First time there with the 1M and loved it.
If you can make it, do it! It's amazing. 11 miles - 318 corners...US 129 Deal's Gap - Tail of the Dragon (Same place Car and Driver tested the 1M vs TTRS vs G37 IPL) Photos were taken by roadside photographers. Hopefully the photos will inspire people to check it out. |

I hear there is an AW 1M with around 400hp that prowls that stretch of road.
Maybe this fall I'll be heading up to see if the rumors are true.

I first saw the front shot and was like wow... then the rear, and i passed out... Wish I could see the car on the road even while I'm driving haha. The road seems amazing, unfortunately so far

If you have the time and are coming from the north you might want to consider driving the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia until you get maybe 50 miles away. It isn't much of a driving challenge but is more fun than the interstate. There are a huge number of scenic overlooks where you can stop for pictures. It takes time, however, because the speed limit is 45mph or less. I didn't see tons of police but there were some. There are also motorhomes and other slow traffic - but not a lot.
My only drive on the dragon was labor day in 2009. My son and I enjoyed it but the Harleys were out in force and are EXTREMELY SLOW. Worse than family sedans. One tried to go a little faster and promptly went off the road (not a good thing to do on the dragon). Coming back we had it wide open for a bit (road, not car) and then followed a sport bike. He was moving only a little slower than I wanted to but moved over when he had a chance (unlike the dog slow harleys). It was fun. I got a few pictures from the commercial photographers in the woods too. I think they were $6 each. The picture at the left is one of them, reduced. That whole area of NC has nice roads for a drive. Here's a map: Jim

I'll head up and see if I can rustle up some Floridians and Georgians along the way.

I'd prefer to go on a week day but that may be hard to do for a lot of folks. The TOD is so much more fun on a week day. My house is 1/2 way between Atl and TOD so if you get some folks together from the city I'm just 1 mile off 129 N and my bathroom is clean. Punch and pie, let me know.

we used to go there a few times a year and 421 about once a month. this is one of the reasons i LOVE living on this side of NC (orig from raleigh). remember that the BRP is federal territory and a speeding ticket could result in a federal charge (even though the speed limit is higher than the dragon): http://www.smokymountainnews.com/iss...new_fines.html make sure killboy finds you! and here is the fact sheet...be safe: http://tailofthedragon.com/dragon.html |

One fact I always found interesting about TOD. All deaths occurred to the rider/driver when they were heading north. If someone is riding with me I always tell them this fact when heading south and explain that statistically we can take huge chances because no one has ever died heading south. This never goes over well with said passenger.

Thanks, I have a Curt hitch for a 135i...A member on the forums (ducturd) helped me out with the install...I had to drop the exhaust and remove the rear lower fascia to install it. I only use it for carrying bikes, no towing.

Looks like a fun day and a good group of cars to go out with.
Your car looks great with that bumper and the Alufelgens. What colour are the wheels? |
