I settled on the Black Vue DR400G-HD made by a Korean company. Without going to much into it, here's some of the key features:

1080P recording
GPS position recording
3 axis motion sensor to detect large movements such as accidents
Parking mode (turns on to record when it detects movement in front of it)
Continuous recording onto micro sd card.

I also purchased the power controller (black magic) which allows you to leave the camera in parking mode until the car battery voltage falls to a certain state and shuts off so that it doesn't drain the battery.

I followed hardwire guides found on this forum for the V1. This method uses the fuse box hidden behind the glove box. For this install, a constant 12V and a switched 12V line was needed. To connect to the fuse box, you can use mini blade fuse taps (I found some 10A $7 ones from Jaycar). The power controller was installed inside the glove box and the power cable run through the A pillar into the headliner and along the rear view mirror casing into the dashcam.

The HARDEST part would be finding an empty fuse that's the right amperage

Needless to say, I spent the good part of an hour testing every empty fuse slot I could reach through the tiny gap. So here they are:

Constant 12V: No. 2,3,7,64,68,56 I ended up using 64
Switched 12V: 5, 7(this one is not empty so I used 5)

And.... pictures of the install:

Pulling the wire through to the glove box

Make sure you run this AROUND your airbag and hold it down with the included cable holders. You don't want to restrict the movement of the airbag in the event of a deployment.

Behind the glove box, a small hole to work with (esp with big hands like mine)

The constant 12V fuse tap connected

Ground wire connected to this bolt conveniently located in that area

Power controller mounted inside glove box

Wire held down onto the rear view mirror casing for clean look

From inside the car

From the front

I'm quite happy with the image quality and the features are awesome. Now I can have some piece of mind when parking my car. If you are thinking of getting the same one, note there is a version 2 so get that one (didn't do enough research )

Have you figured out how to remove the head light sensor alert that pops up at night? so annoying! because fo the front camera blocking the sensor

Have you figured out how to reply to someone without quoting their entire original post, complete with all 9 photos?

Used this thread to install mine today. Only issue was that fuse 5 on my car seemed to be live all the time. Fuse 7 seemed fine though so used this with a piggyback device.

It is a UK car though, so perhaps that why.

I actually haven't had that problem Ian.... Got any pics of how/where your camera is mounted? Could it be differences between the E82 and E9x?

I've mounted mine at the top of the winscreen to the left of the rear view mirror to avoid any issues with the hi beam assist sensor, also just had the top of the winscreen tinted to help hide where the camera sticks on the screen.

It doesn't look like the OP has the HBA sensor hence why no issues with the camera position:

Just remove the screw from behind the airbag cover plate and then pull the panel up not out. There are 2 upside down U shaped clips that hold in place. Just need to apply a bit of horizontal pressure when refitting to make sure it locates properly, took me a couple of attempts to get the top clip in.

Do you guys know which side is the hot side of the fuse port? I used a multimeter with a thin wire and tested both sides and can not get continuity. For ground I'm using that bolt. I hooked it up to slot 64 with 5A fuse for the battery power wire to the power magic pro and it works.

I'm liking the 650 myself. Would love front and rear. Not sure on if power magic pro required though. Would prefer battery to turn itself off at a certain voltage Ala Volphreaks Lithium Ion. Saves stuffing about with wiring

I'm looking at getting the bang for buck alternative, G1W-C $55 USD
It has a capacitor for those high heat Melbourne days!

Anyone got any idea how to hardwire it and hide the cables though?

Group buy on the batteries or the BlackVue DR600/650/750? Li-Ion VPH750/VPH900 might be a bit expensive for peoples tastes. Even mine.

Would be nice to know if the newer models have the "power magic pro" built in.

I've got the older model 550 with front and rear cameras. I wanted the rear view because I bought mine after a small accident where an 18 year old P-plater in a FWD Korean shitbox tried to pass me on the inside lane of a roundabout at some ridiculous speed (her not me) and under-steered the nose of her car into my driver side door when she failed to take the apex. Then tried to blame me. Fortunately in this case there was a witness driving behind her who saw the whole thing and stopped to give me his details.

All came good in the end with a top quality repair job and no excess to pay but it would have been a he-said, she-said issue with the insurer if not for the witness. If I had the rear view camera at the time, it would have been priceless to see the look on her face as she out drove her ability.

The audio would have been nice to hear too seeing as she came right up to my window after the event. What a potty-mouth mole she was too.

I'm looking at one without parking mode so I just need to tack into the cigg lighter.... except our cigg lights aren't as easy to get to as our fuse boxes.

Any DIY guides on the fuse box?

All of them can plug into the cigi lighter. Parking mode is just being stationary for 10 mins and goes into parking mode to record movement.

You don't have to use it.
