Is 2 snow-tires enough?
I live in New York, and I'm wondering if I just put 2 snow tires on the rear tires. (rear-wheel drive of course)
Will I be ok with 2? |

I am serious. Summer tires have zero grip in even the smallest of snowfalls.
And when I say zero grip I mean MUs and MUk are actually zero. |

I dunno, it sounded dumb to me, but when I was at my local BMW center, one of the spokespersons actually said that to me. I figured I'd get some better info here.
btw I only spent 28,000 for my car |

Regardless of what you paid, a snow set is a snow SET, you need all 4 to get the performance they give out. Its the same as people who replace 2 tires and not all 4. I mean if your cars tires are soo rediculously bald in front and not back (example), first off you're retarded for not rotating properly, second thats just gonna continue the path of unevenly worn tires. Honestly, this tire business is so damn easy but its amazing how few people in this world really get it. |

RTFM. The owners manual talks about snow tires, and recommends a specific size for your car, as well as the practice of using four tires. I would say that other than very unusual cars with large variances in tire wear front to rear, you should replace all four tires with the same make and model and weather specification. Think of it this way, a set of cheap snow tires will set you back maybe $500. How much would it cost to repair a wheel, front axel, front bumper after you slide off the raid into a light post knocking over? Add the cost of the light post to that and you are well past a second set of wheels and tires! Or, just don't drive at all in winter, use snow shoes!

Get 4 yes FOUR snow tires.
I used to have a hyundai accent and run 2 studded snows in front and all seasons in the back (btw, this was not my idea, my $#^ decided to put them on and give me the car)... they actually worked well, but the car had understeered terribly, and your 1er doesn't. You won't be so lucky. |

Hmm, the could be why it is so hard to find a date in DC... All the girls are fat and lazy? Well, not all. Actually, last winter lots of people were out walking in the snow. I myself used the snowshoes, which were very effective for going to the grocery store, office, etc. No more slipping and sliding.

Well if you can't afford 4 new snow tires maybe you can get 4 used ones.
ps - not really

You would be surprised how very LITTLE the owner's manual talks about winter tires. It doesnt talk about a specific size, it only recommends installing the proper size, never specifying what that size is. It also says a little bit about tire chains, and how not to exceed the speed ratings for the winter tires you have installed, thats it. I went to the manual looking to see if it recommended specific tire sizes for winter tires and it didnt say a damn thing about it. OP, get a set of 4, be safe. Even though the front wheels do not have power going to them, snow tires will help with turning. |
