"service engine soon" question..

so the other day the display between RPM and MPH gaugues flashed the icon for the gas cap not being completed closed. When i ended my drive I got out and properly closed the cap. As soon as I turned the car back on, my "service engine soon" light came on. I called my dealer the next morning, and then said that the gas cap issue probably triggered the "service engine soon" light, and that after a few "cycles" the light would go off. What exactly does that mean, and how many "cycles" do i need to go through before the light goes off? I've driven the car probably 8-10 times since the light first came on. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
