I'm supposed to go in at 11,000. Is that normal? I was under the impression the first service was at 15,000 miles?

The countdown figure indicates how many more miles have to elapse before the scheduled service. Add this to your odometer reading, and you'll have an estimate of when your service will be due. Alternatively, BMW will change the oil & filter for free after one year, even if you haven't traveled the requisite number of miles.

Mine says 7K till first service. i have 9k on it now. But come june it will be a year so at that point i believe BMW is supposed to change your oil at least once a year if you don't reach the 15k mark

I just got my car serviced at 11730 miles, and i had my car for less than a year, only 7 months, I thought with the warranty, bmw was suppose to change your oil for free every time you reach a certain amout of miles, and it didn't matter whether it was once a year or not cause ins't the warrenty four years or fifty thousand miles, which ever one is first

Check your owner's and warranty/service manuals for "Condition Based Service".

BMW will pay for your service when either the dash countdown reaches zero, or one year has elapsed since your last service - not at any particular mileage. While the average mileage interval called for is about 15,000 miles, it may be more or less, depending on your driving style.

this is better place to ask

computer on my car says 17000 mile to go for the 1st oil change with now 8000 miles I put on the car.
So, the computer also tell what month/year for the next oil change? I'll check. I wonder 1 year mark is counted as car built date/ED pick up/redelivery time for a brand new car?

You should get you oil changed after 1 year, your count down seems off. My car only has 650 miles on it and already says 14,000 left to service.

Not according to my SA. Talked to him today about this. They will NOT change after a year regardless of mileage. It is by the computer. Now it is only based on useage, according to the service interval indicator. Which can sometimes mean 12,000 or 15,000 miles according to how you drive.

He did say however, that the computer will say "oil service soon" after it gets under 1,000. And at that point BMW will do the service for free even tho it is not at zero yet.

I'm over 15.5K and still reading 500 miles on countdown. Though I've done 4K and 10K so I'll be patient.

Ask your SA if this is a new policy for the 2009 - as my 2008 Service/Warranty manual states (in boldface) on page 6 that the oil & filter should be changed at least once per year.

This has been BMW's practice for a number of years now and I'd be curious if it has changed in the past few months.

took my car yesterday for my first 5000 Km service. all they do was tightening some screws, checking liquids, oil... they did not change the oil, the tech told me it should be done each 10,000 Km, I wondered if that was a bit too much but he insisted that there is no need to change a synthetic oil at 5000!
anyway, my car is not a turbo and I'm not into racing and stuff so maybe it's ok to stick with the 10000 Km intervals. what do you think guys?

I'll check with my SA next week when they put out my airbag light again. And take care of my creaky center arm rest.

I did change mine at 1250 and again at 7000 so when my July inspection is due was hoping the oil could be changed same time.
Just topped 10,000 miles yesterday. My car was a July 15 delivery.

A BMW CA told me last year that BMW no longer gives free 1-yr oil changes (despite the maint. manual stating it should be done at least annually). He stated that BMW Service ONLY goes by the computer / cond. based schedule.

He even said if you only drive your car 4000-5000 miles/year, you might not receive ANY free BMW maintenance your entire first 4-yrs of ownership. IMO, that STINKS for low-mileage garage queens!

Since the manual recommends annual oil changes, I suggest a few of us call BMW NA and ask or complain about the discrepancy.

Good point. I checked with my dealer a couple of days ago as I had an oil change in July, 08 (on my dime). I was told to schedule an appointment at least one year from my delivery date (May, 08) and they would be happy to do the service.
