Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5: Winter Run Flats

I've heard great reviews of these tires for winter/deep snow, but they do seem very expensive and not carried by many people like TireRack. But they come in RFT sizes Blizzak doesn't, like the 205/50/17 I'm looking for my 135 'vert. Are they worth it ?

Hakka's 5 studded are one of the best winter tires.

+1 on the Nokian being the best in the world for dedicated snow tires! Are they worth it? Heck yeah. You will pay a little bit more for Nokian but you get what you pay for then some. No question about it. Last time I priced them out, I talked with Josh and they seemed to have the best prices around and free shipping:

http://www.tiresbyweb.com/tbw_tirese...choice2=Nokian

El Diablo, as for the standard vs. run-flat, any tire expert should tell you to run with the same as OEM. I will give a phone call, because I know in the past they have offered club discounts. That's how I found out about them. Will let you guys know.

I had them on 16 in. steel wheels w/BMW wheel covers for my E46 325Ci. They are the best for snow. I laughed when it snowed.

I have heard good things about most of the Nokian tires as well. There is often some talk about them on the Subaru STI/Legacy forums.

If you want a real winter tire but don't care about it being studdable, check out the Nokian Hak. RSI. The Nokian WR G2 is also suppose a very good long-wearing, semi-performance winter if that is what you want (and the tread pattern is pretty awesome). The WR G2's are also non-directional, so they can be rotated normally, which is a plus.

So are the Hak 5's only available with studs? I missed that detail. I don't think studs are legal where I am. I might have to go with the Hak Rsi studless you recommended, but they don't have run-flats in my 205/50/17 size, ugh.....which means I could go back to non-run flat Blizzacks available in that size too.

i Wonder which would be better, if I have to go non-run-flat? Blizzak or Nokian Hak Rsi?

It looks like the Hak 4 and 5's are studded, though I am not sure if they can be bought without them. It would probably then be very close to the RSI anyway.

This is from the Nokian website, and it looks like they make several run-flats in those sizes. You may need to find someone who can special order them if they are rare.

Go here and click on the "run-flat property" on the right hand side to see this:

Run flat property (optional)

You can drive about 50 kilometres on an empty tyre if the car is fully loaded. If the car is only carrying the driver, the transition drive can be up to 150 kilometres. Nokian Tyres recommends a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour. In very slippery conditions the speed should be kept down to about 50 km/h. For safety reasons, run flat tyres can only be mounted on cars with air pressure monitoring that is integrated into the IT system or some other system that warns of tyre pressure changes, and a driving stability management system (ESP).

Nokian Tyres will manufacture 17 run flat products (*=summer tyre):
195/55R16
- Nokian NRVi*, Nokian WR, Nokian Hakkapelitta RSi, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
205/55R16
- Nokian Z*, Nokian WR, Nokian Hakkapelitta RSi, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
205/50R17
- Nokian Z*, Nokian WR, Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
225/45R17,
- Nokian Z*, Nokian WR, Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
225/50R17
- Nokian Z*, Nokian WR, Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
255/50R19
- Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV 5, Nokian WR SUV

Very Cool ! Thanks ! Lots of Run-Flat options!

And the Hak 5 appears available as either "studded" or "studdable":

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
[ Winter Studdable Performance ]

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 STUDDED
[ Winter Studded

https://www.tiresbyweb.com/m-108-nokian.aspx

I'll call Tires by Web tomorrow and see what's available. Sounds like I've got to get these Nokians. Whats a few more bucks if they're that much better, and they keep my new 135 out of the highway median this winter.....thx!

But now; the Hak RSi or the Hak 5? Hak 5 looks more hardcore winter tire, right?

I did just that this morning. TiresbyWeb called me by 9am this morning after I emailed them a question last night. Very good service, and the guy on the phone had all the answers ....& now the Hakka 5 studless are already in the mail heading my way:
205/50/17 RunFlat Studless Hakka 5's

I've never bought winter tires in AUGUST before ! I guess I'm fired up for ski season already, and want to keep driving my new 135 straight through the winter ! :headbang:

How much should mounting them cost?

Call a couple places saying you have winter tires you want mounted and balance. Typically $10-15 each tire. Buying dedicated snow tires in August is like shopping with double coupons. If they have what you want, you get a great deal! I will be interested in you initial impression of those tires and also once you get to put them to the test.
