Gill - help! Canadian 128 Sport Pacakge (18") + Winter = ?

Gill / fellow addicts,

This week, I'll be taking possession (not that this matters, but I just feel like telling the world!) of a canadian 128 with sport package which means 18in tires with different widths between front & rear ( Front : 215/40 R 18 85Y, Rear: 245/35 R 18 88 Y) and, if I understand correctly, rims with different widths.

For winter, my 1st thought was to simply buy 18" run-flat winter tires, but after surfing the net, I realised that it's just not reccomended to use different tire widths during the winter (all 4 should be the same).

2 1/2 questions:

1a) If I get with a full set of 17" run flats with sensors installed from Tirerack (wheels + tires), will the sensors be readily compatible with the 128i?

1b) Will I be able to go to any garage to get the wheels installed or is there some re-programming / extra wiring needed?

2) Could I consider buying two additionnal 18" wheels, of the same width as front ones, and order four 18" tires? (Bridgestone Blizak LM -22)

1a. Yes the sensor will be compatible. They are actually the same as OE here in the states. I've not heard of Canadian models coming with those sensors though. Are you sure you have them? I could certainly be wrong

1b. There is nothing extra that a garage needs to do. They wheels/tires would be mounted and balanced and ready to go on the vehicle. Nothing else is needed.

2. That would work perfectly fine.

mab, if you got a Canadian car we do not have TPMS sensors in the wheels. We use TPW which senses differences in rotational speed caused by under-inflated tires.

Gill,
Just checking on an old question - do you have any word that anyone is going to offer a snow tire to fit either stock 18" wheel (front or rear) on the 135i?

Thanks Gill, that's great. Will this size work on both wheels? Which ones do you recommend? I'm in NJ and will probably run them from December through March.

Do you know if 17s will clear the 135 brakes?

Yes, many do.

The easiest way to see everything that fits, in all sizes, is to click the "shop now" link at the top of this page, enter the vehicle information, and click on "Winter"
