For my E82 N54 auto it just took a custom exhaust and MHD with the burble options set, along with xHP to get the trans shifting properly...

I went custom exhaust with Borla, and think it sounds better than this video, and suspect that even a basic PE would get you as good or better sounding than this guy's exhaust, but that might be just because of his mic placement for the recording.

I agree with 1and1. Here's a video from 3002 tii from a few years ago of his stock 135is (no longer owns the car) that comes with the Performance exhaust and PPK2 that sounds pretty damn good. He has an external mic at the rear of the car.

Still one of my "goal" videos right there-

Really wish I knew the mic configuration used! I'd love to duplicate that clear sound with my setup...
Best I've pulled off so far is with the mic taped to my bumper just over the exhaust tips, but even then I still get some wind noise despite using a big ol' fuzzy

(don't mind the ninja edit )

N55 will always sound better than any twin turbo N54. Only way to get that sound is to go single turbo.

audio technica 24 inside one of those furry mic cover to cut out wind. Mic is held by a suction mount on rear bumper.

I was going to go down the path of trying to make my N55 135i so it would sound like my older M2 N55 and the plan was the following.

Custom single downpipe (similar to the one on the M2) I was planning using my stock M2 Downpipe since I had gone aftermarket on mine

Build a single midpipe to eliminate the dual mid the 135i has oem

The new single midpipe would then feed into an M Performance Muffler I already had.

Speculative Pros:
Sound similar to M2

Cons:
Costly if you want it done right and not hacked up.

I had a local welder quote me about $400 in material and about $1000 in labor. This was keeping dual exit downpipe(like stock style) rather than also building a custom single exit downpipe.

Given that I already had an M2 at that time I ditched the idea since I didn't want to spend that much on an experiment.

I sold my used MPE and bought a brand new one that included resonator delete for about $700. Love that setup.

Hmmmm- Using the same set-up, but ended up taping to the bumper when my suction cups were all amazingly bad at staying on the bumper. Also I seemed to get less wind noise when the mic was positioned closer to the bumper, but still more than I expected...

I'll tinker some more when the weather breaks to cooler temps again

Maybe your mic batteries need to be replaced? FWIW I had mine mounted on rear directly pointing down to the pipes. I’ve done the same for track days and it always came out good, very little wind given the higher speeds.

kinda hate you a little bit right now!

OK, No I don't, but I really need to get more experience with the mic and placement! And I'll certainly be replacing the battery- I used the one that came with it, and never even checked it's voltage so it may well have been all but dead when I got it.

This is the best of what I got at the time, and I was tired of chasing a decent video by this point so stopped here despite the poor quality. Sounds much better with headphones, at least on my laptop with crappy speakers!

Yea not great... it’s almost like the mic itself isn’t switched on (because some will still record even when off). What are you actually recording with? My videos are super old and those were captured using a GoPro 3 but I did pay up to use the official GoPro 1/8th to USB adapter.
