I'm also in a tough situation with CA smog. This year I'm required to take a STAR test so even with the working DP fix, I still won't pass visual. I've yet to swap back to my OEM DP because I can't decide if I want to hollow it out and run the fix or just keep the cat in tact and run without the fix. If I hollow the OEM pipe out I can use that permanently for visual instead of putting the VRSF back in. It sounds like once I get past that barrier, I'm going to run into more issues with the software side of things. Is it normal to have to reflash from the dealer instead of just setting MHD to 'OEM DP' and running the fix? At this point I've non-op'ed the vehicle while I try to figure this CA bs out

Now I'm starting to wonder if I'll have issues come smog time. I'm currently using MHD, what made you guys go to the state ref?
Was it because you were unable to pass smog or did you get pulled over and receive a ref ticket for modifications? |

This whole situation and on some level, MHD Tuning 's reluctance to comment is what gives me anxiety on my upcoming smog check. Did the state process for smog checks change and they now include something that verifies an additional parameter that can be voided by the use of MHD? Or is this the case of some type of user error that is resulting in people failing? My past tests were passed on MHD stage 0, should I continue to test under this value knowing that my past test is still logged and will be checked against this? I had someone come to me to flash his car back to stock via MHD since he had to go see a ref. He flashed it using his tablet and off he went to smog/ref.
no problems and this was back in June. are you guys doing a stock backup on MHD before flashing? |

So has anyone lately smogged their car with MHD Stage 2+, with DP’s still on, the DP fix installed, and passed? I did this in 2018 and passed, but now am concerned for my smog next year.

For the guys who had issues, what year is your 1er.
I see MattH has a 2011, which MHD changes to rom version 98G0B. I wonder if his stock flash was a different rom, and if mhd flashes the 98G0B rom back as the stock flash, then the smog scanner sees it as an error because somehow it can see the original ROM version was different? Just a guess.

What I am not sure on is when you remove MHD, whether or not it defaults to the stock 98G0B ROM or the original ROM that was on the car. And I don’t know if it matters or not but mi was thinking about why this is happening and thought I’d ask hoping an expert can clarify.

I have a Cobb Tuner, I plan on considering MHD when my turbo goes out and I need to upgrade. For now I am FBO with Cobb and I am happy with the car.
I wanted to give an update and retrospect: First, shout out to HP Autosport who helped me through this and removed my mods and put the car back to stock and then put all the mods back on again. Harold really hooked me up. Second, Cobb tuning has been very responsive to my emails and provided me with enough assurance that I am going to reflash my car back to the Cobb tune. My mistake was to take the car with the Cobb Stage 3 tune to an unreliable smog technician. In this state my car had the 1st O2 sensors shut off since I was running a catless dp. My thinking was if i take the tune off I'd have a CEL and void smog test. So, like a dummy, I went to a unreliable smog tech with my O2 sensors off and one way or the other, I got flagged. That tech wouldn't tell me why and sent me into a panic. We all guessed it was the visible FBO mods, so we took them off and removed the tune and the stock cat put back on. As I reported here, I failed the first go around with the smog referee because the software security checksum codes didn't match the factory BMW code. I reflashed at my local BMW dealer and then passed smog referee. Cobb has assured me the checksum codes will be intact and safely stored on the tuner but I can't fully account for what happened to it in the first place. Thinking to avoid this, I purchased a catted DP and plan to remove the tune so I can run without a CEL for the smog test. I am also putting CARB stickers on all the shiny parts so I can pass a visual. In the case I fail again, I know what to do going forward. I also have a business concept: I am renting out a box of stock n55 135i items you need to pass smog with. Like stock intercooler, charge pipe, intake, and catalytic converter. I had to come up with this and it wasn't easy. You put a deposit of whatever the items cost new, when they are all returned, i give your money back less $250, you pay all shipping. Serious, it's it available to rent, hit me up. |

Harold is awesome to deal with.
Would be nice if there were an app that can do the checksum test before hand so you could uninstall and find out now if what Cobb is saying is accurate and so others can check before going to the smog center. MHD does some of this by telling you which monitors are ready, maybe they can add this additional check. I am surprised you are happy with the Cobb accessport (i am assuming you are running an OTS tune). They stopped development on this platform years ago, and what MHD has developed since being released is massive. My car ran like crap with the Cobb OTS map. I have run COBB, JB4, and MHD, and MHD is light years better. I think we still need confirmation from MHD Tuning or Twisted Tuning as to why this checksum error may occur. Glad everything is squared away for you and your car is running good.

Also, I found it interesting that of the cars listed on that pdf as having false checks, only one (the Sentra SE-R) would I even stereotype as maybe having the need to bypass smog. |

Without specific info from MHD I'm not sure we can know what effects of flashing will be on the CVN. I get the feeling that companies will be very tight-lipped about sharing this information given how aggressive CARB has been (e.g. BMS got fined $100,000 by CARB for selling OCCs, JB4s, and other things.)
I posted the CARB link just because I thought it would offer insight into some of the specifics about the smog OBDII scan which I used to think was trivial as long as there wasn't an active check engine light. Before I stumbled across that document I didn't even know about the CVN business. Now I understand how much pressure smog places must be experiencing to do everything by the book. |
