Full car electrical failure; trying to diagnose

Hi guys I was wondering if anybody had experienced the following, and/or had a solution.

Car will run perfectly for days. I'll drive out for a dinner. I come back after an hour and the car won't unlock. Key also won't slot into position, no welcome lights, and car does not start. Absolutely zero power.

I'll come back in another hour, and the car works perfectly again. Time and date on the car will have changed though. This happens on and off for the last few weeks.

Im trying to diagnose the problem; I'm reluctant to consider it a battery issue only, but I could be wrong.
Any ideas? Thanks friends

try looking at the battery terminal clamps. sometimes this can be a symptom of a bad earth or bad overall circuit. Had a terminal fracture on one of my old cars which did as you described. Replaced the terminals and everything was right as rain.

If the time is resetting, it might be something causing the battery to disconnect intermittently? Maybe check wiring? How old is the battery?

Yep if time is resetting, it's either the battery, the IBS or wiring to/from the battery. Give your terminal clamps a good scrub with a wire brush to start.

Maybe also try measuring voltage at the battery and at the jump start terminals, if they are significantly different this could be a indication of faulty wiring somewhere

If the battery stuff suggested doesn't work check there is no water leak in boot RHS where the access control modules are. Mine got wet and produced similar symptoms. Modules bined and replaced.

Had something similar.. it ended up being something so simple, check the connections. Are they tight? Undo and redo them.

Could also be the battery (my opinion not based on experience). Just charge it up with one of those overnight battery chargers that most ppl are using for MHD flashes?

And the FOB battery.

I have the same issue with my 128i E88, random ZERO POWER and if I just wait an hour or overnight it works again great. I have no ground issues that I can detect with the fluke and power is hot to the front jumper terminal so no clue. Its getting on my nerves to the point I think I am gonna dump the car and move on. Dealer has not been able to find it after four trips to them and once it even did it to them while they had it. They actually said they have no idea and cut me loose with a failed car.

ideas?

Behind the glove box is the fuse box. Check out the back of it for red battery cable where it goes in. My wife’s car had same issue and it was sparking randomly cutting out power....you could see where it was burnt out.

It was a recall in USA I think but never in Aus. I took it all apart and showed the bmw dealership mechanic and had it done as part of recall.

Just had an issue like this in my car except the whole car was dying. I had to push start it then it was running, drove it abit and everything was going wrong. All electronics shutting off and car started overheating because electrical waterpump shut off, battery voltage dropping. Tried to figure it out testing with a new battery and checking alternator. Turns out to be just the ground wire under the car that corroded away. 8$ later she starts up right away and no issues.

That power connector issue at the fuse box is a recall, if you haven't had it done yet take it in.
