Jack Pads
Yes, this is my first BMW...
I just realized that I can't use a normal jack to swap my wheels because of the special jack pads that BMW uses. I've seen a few places selling adapters online but I need one this week. How do you guys swap wheels? I'd like to do this at home, otherwise I have to ask a friend with a truck to pick up my wheels, take them to the hobby shop and drop off the old ones back at my flat. |

There is other jacking points under the body if you can get to them, or some use hockey puck. You can use your normal jack on those adapter, it might break them a little, but if it is only to swap wheels, you should be fine, just don't go under the car... Those special adapter are a pain in the ass at first, but once you have the right tools, they are a charm to work with.

Might also look into the hockey puck thing. Surely I can find a hockey puck someplace in Weisbaden. |

A block of wood does it for me to. If its to big just roll your car on some wood so you can lift it.

Never looked closely at the 1er...but the E90 had a lift point located just behind the engine center of car. It was a thick plastic rectangle set into a circular point the same dimension as a standard jack pad. The rear I have always done at the pumpkin. Alternately, you can use the plastic moulded lift points.
If I needed to lift an individual tire I just used a block of wood. A 2x4 cut down to fit on the jack pad and thin enough to slide under the lower control arm. In order to raise the front of the e90 enough to get my 4x4 5 ton jack under it I screwed some other 2x4s together and made a hasty ramp that could also double as a chock block.

The one has that point also but it's 2feet under the front so you really need a low-profile jack to reach it.
Mr Kleen, still need the pad? Is tomorrow okay? My coworker can deliver to hainersberg lodge at 1700...will that work?

It just occurred to me: did the AAFES shop lift my car correctly when I had them swap the winter wheels? I better get under there and check tonight…
Any other special BMW tools I should get when I order the jack pad adapter? |

Most lifts will put even pressure at the four corners and usually...I use that term lightly with AAFES....not mess up the jack points. As far as other tools it depends on what you plan on doing yourself.

General maintenance mostly. Not doing DPs or anything major, I scratched that itch with my WRX.
Silly question: I wanted to protect my new wheels before installing them. Can I just use car wax on them or should I get something special? The AAFES shop didn't have anything other than chrome polish or wheel cleaner. |

If you have alloy wheels you really don't need anything to put on them. Your gonna have to put up with the black dust from hell on the front wheels but Sonax sells some really good wheel cleaner. If you plan on doing your own oil change you'll need the ratchet fitting. And a good torque wrench for wheel tightening. I also recommend a good digital tire pressure gauge. Look for your local ATU for these things.

Wheel wax FTW!
I don't think regular wax will hold up to the heat generated, brake dust, and the general elements. http://www.autogeek.net/whwaxcarca.html

I have a good tire pressure gauge but I've been meaning to get a torque wrench for some time now...
I'm going to wax them with regular wax while I wait for my Wheel Wax order to arrive. With no place to wash my car at home, I honestly don't do it that often. Anything that makes it easier is a good thing. Gotta get these wheels fitted on Friday, I can't wait. |

What everybody said here pretty much covers it but if you want some more reading material I found the info in this thread the most helpful when I changed my wheels. Especially post #33 with the diagram of the jack points. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ht=jack&page=2
Like most things you can make a wheel change as complicated or simple as you would like, never the less here are my suggestions. -When jacking up the rear make sure to use the differential and not the differential cover. -My favorite tool for swapping wheels is my wheel pin. It makes R2'ing a set of wheels/tires so much easier. No stress on aligning the bolts or scratching a rim. http://leatherz.com/Merchant5/mercha...etyConvenience -Unless you have a really low profile jack you will probably need to use a set of blocks to drive the front wheels on to get some extra clearance under the front bumper. I made mine out of gluing an 18" and 30" piece of 2x6 on top of each other. -I use hockey pucks but I will probably end up getting the jack pads from burger. -A wheel swap sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a cool tool like a torque wrench. -If your driveway is sloped maybe a set of wheel chocks? They are less than 5 euro for two at ATU. Maybe overkill but I'm paranoid. -Maybe buy a rubber mallet if you don't have one. My wheels always seem to get stuck to the hub and I have to hit them from behind with the mallet to get them to cooperate.

I still have so much to learn about living overseas...
The tracking numbers for the wheels said they should be delivered on Tuesday. I checked my APO and, sure enough, I had a package slip. Today I have my buddy drive his truck to work so I can get the wheels on the way home. I went to the post office and my iPad case had arrived. The iPad case that was supposed to arrive NEXT FRIDAY. Stupid me didn't check the package bin code. If so I would have known it was a "small package" and not "tires." DOH! |

Bummer, it sucks to get fooled like that. Sometimes those tracking numbers only show when the package gets to NJ and is handed over to the military to ship the rest of the way. Hope the wheels get there soon.

They were in NJ on Friday so the Tuesday delivery made some sense, at least to the rookie.

Well ,I hate to say it but if they did not send it priority it could take a couple of months to get here.My computer monitor took about two months. First class packages especially bigger ones sit space A until there is room on a boat to bring it across. And for bigger packages there is a weight limit on what can ship priority. Hope for the best man.
