Loaner broke down and I almost died... well, not really!

I had a 2013 X1 loaner today and found myself almost t-boned when there was a noticeable lag during a speedy left turn across traffic... then, later, at a stoplight I looked at the RPM gauge and saw that it was at zero. I tried to restart to no avail. When I finally gave up and took my foot off the brake, the engine came to life!

I learned about these 'auto-shutoff' things the hard way. There really ought to be a label somewhere; the dealer said nothing about it.

I did like not watching my MPG go down while at a light.

Compared to my 128 the X1 seemed a bit jerky starting off, and felt cheap when opening and closing the doors. It felt nice to sit in and was appointed well. 4 cylinder turbo? 8 forward speeds? A lot different than the 128i for sure!

That auto shutoff - hate it. Why have a turbo for speed and then add a start up to go? There is a button to kill it. Then the x1 is ok. Had a loaner for two weeks.

Yeah it was the auto-shutoff. I found it really annoying, plus it must wear out the starter faster. The button to turn it off is next to the downhill assist button by the shifter, looks like a power sign with a circle around it. My loaner had a eco-mode as well which would short rev at 1500-2000 RPM said I saved 1.8L over 4 days.

As I understood it the auto restart doesn't use the starter to restart the car. I remember reading it just injects fuel and spark to the cylinder that is at the power stroke. That's enough on a warm engine to start the car.

Cars with MSA (auto start/stop) have a larger, more durable starter.

Nope, still uses the starter. Just starts very quickly due to direct injection and more accurate crankshaft position sensor.

Does this ASS thing work before the car reaches full operating temps? Because I've been told my entire life that cold starts are where almost all engine wear occurs. So who's lying?

Also - what if its 100 degrees out and you're doing a little spirited driving but come upon a red light? So your very literally red hot turbo charger and transmission suddenly are deprived of your oil pump and cooler heat sink?

I mean that's purposely doing what I've always been told will destroy your very expensive motor. So were they lying to me all these years ?

Perhaps I'm missing something or I don't really understand the way ASS works?
Can someone explain this system to me??

BMW really needs to refine their auto SS system it's crap compared to others. I tried it once in the F30 and it was cool until it restarted, very rough and unBMWish. Sometimes i think they should just toss it out completely.

Or people who want to save money, or people who want to enjoy driving cars without killing the planet. Didn't you guys just get slammed by two unprecedented storms? Maybe those eco-crazy people have a point?

OP, there is a way to turn it off. X1 with an N55 sounds like potential for a fun ride.

Sorry, i'd rather spend a few bucks more rather then slowly destroy my motor by turning it on and off constantly. Yeah we got some snow storms, whoopdy freakin do i'm pretty sure they've been occurring here for a long time regardless if we were here or not. What happened to global warming everybody was so sure was happening? I'd be more concerned about nuclear fallout and humans killing each other rather then us destroying the planet.

edit: also a good way to minimize exhaust emissions would be to get more diesels in the US. For some reason the US has put a stigma on diesels that they're the worst thing for the environment when they are more efficient then gasoline engines. My 200hp 360ft/lbs lifted Jeep liberty CRD(2.8 straight 4 turbo diesel from vmmotori) got 25mpg, probably close to 30 if it was stock without all the off road parts.

Baby Boomers view diesel as a loud and weird looking foreign monster shooting Black Death smoke out a tail pipe. I should think younger folks would be more open minded about the benefits of diesels; afterall they're mostly European and anything European is mostly awesome to younger folks but it just ain't so for some reason.

You can switch the start/stop system off.

I had a 320d loaner and loved the feature. Car would start before I'd get my foot across to the accelerator so it made near enough to no difference in driving style. You could disable it but I liked it and the car would also start if it needed to crank up the air con.

Tho in regards to the OP, the dealer really should have taken 30s to explain it.

Hate this feature. From experience with my loaner I drive Auto SS off! Glad I can still enjoy driving a BMW without the forced Eco crap being put on the consumer.

I hear that the efficient dynamic will be the new standard on all BMWs in a few years :/

~2 mpg. That is significant.

It's already in most of the BMW lineup...

Probably the dealer should just print out a small warning label inside the car to make new drivers aware of the start/stop feature.

~2 mpg is significant and I think we all strive to conserve resources but don't you agree that cranking a cold motor and shutting a turbocharged motor off immediately after running it hard is exactly the opposite of what automobile manufactuers have always told us is bad for an engine?

I know you can turn the feature off but shouldn't there be some sort of built in "safety"?

The bottom line is that both of these things can't be true:

1. Cold cranks shorten engine life and shutting down a hot turbocharged motor is harmful.

2. ASS is completely safe.
