Intermittent Tire pressure monitor malfunction

[IMG][/IMG]

Hi everybody! I've been getting this TPI malfunction warning on my dash for the pass couple of weeks. It stays on for a few seconds then goes away. Sometimes multiple times a day. I brought the car to my mechanic and he keeps saying that my rear breaks needs to be changed. Says it's down to zero. The service required section on the dash says the rear brakes are ok. WTF right? That don't got nothing to do with the TPI monitor. But if my brake pads are low, I would still like to change them. How does my rear brake pads look in the photos? I can't really tell. Only 29k on car normal driving.

Looks like there is still plenty of pad material left to me, there is a lip forming on the rotors, but I'd bet the dealership wouldn't replace them under the previous program that covered brake discs/pads. The battery in your TPMS may be almost dead.

I can't see the photo of the malfunction warning but wonder if it's the same as my 2013 128i M-sport. I get one that just says TPM Inactive, and sometimes another that says "TPM external interference". Seems to reset eventually in warm weather but not for over a week in cold weather. Hoping it's the batteries in the wheel sensors but I had new tires put on not too long ago and really don't want to go through that again. I could put my stock wheels back on to check, but more snow is predicted this weekend. Let me know what your fault shows, and what fixes it.

Thank you so much! My mechanic was trying to make me change brakes front and rear for $2700. He says the rear needs to be changed right away….. lucky I didn't fall for it. As for the TPI monitor, he said that all four tires were a few pounds under pressure so that's what tripped the malfunction. I kind of thought that was bullshit also. He's supposed to be some kind of BMW specialist too, with a mural of a M2C he owns on the side of his building. Time to find a new mechanic I guess. Such a bad experience, he had a 4 1/2 star rating on Yelp.

That's actually what's happened to me also. I just got new tires about a month ago. And the weather has been kind of cold these couple of weeks. I hoping it is the TPM battery low. Will let you know if I get it fixed! Thanks!

Just to be sure, you might want to pull a rear wheel off and make sure the pad on the back side of the rotor looks the same as the one you shared a photo of. Not sure how much that mechanic is charging for labor, but here is the cost of parts…

I'm told the TPM batteries seem to be good for about 7-years. Anyone else have a similar experience?
