How to read onboard computer

Hi everyone,

Just picked up a 2008 135i a couple of weeks ago. Only 22K kms!!

I'm looking through the diagnostics computer on the car. The oil light shows 13000kms and has since I purchased the vehicle (has not changed in the approx. 2000 kms I have put on the car)

Does this mean that the oil should have been changed on 13000 kms on the odo, or to change it in 13000 kms (~35K) ?

Also to note is that the car is BMW certified series. I assume this means I got an oil change before delivery of the car?

Secondly, is there a 24000 km service for the 135? It looks like the dash is indicating this as well (picture with car on a hoist). If so, what is included in the 24K service.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

BMW says you should have the oil changed every year or 24K kms which ever comes first. Since our cars have no dip stick... I think it would be best to change your oil NOW! Just for peace of mind.

The bc uses an oil condition sensor... so it can tell the oil level... but also the condition of the oil. So the mileage counter might not change in 2K kms of driving.

Some of us don't believe in BMW's long OCI (oil change intervals). I changed mine every 5K miles. You can buy a oil filter and BMW oil thru United BMW in Georgia or Tischer BMW in Md. $70 USd for the entire kit. Its easy job to do yourself. Or have your dealer change the oil. ONLY use a oil that carried "BMW Long Life-1" rating on it. IF the oil doesn't say "BMW Long Life-1" do not run it! You can use any 0w40, 5w30, or 0w30 grade oils with the BMW LL-1 rating.

The icon with the car on a hoist is just an visual inspection I believe. Have your dealer look at the icon and ask what you should have done.
I wrote a DIY on how to reset the service due lights. You can look in the DIY section to see how to reset all teh various lights.

Brake fluid changes are every two years. You should also see brake pad life left (in kilometers left that you can drive).

Maintenance Records - MAINTENANCE RECORDS

If you bought from a dealer, you should have received an owners manual which will explain everything; read it especially Computer Based Service.
You should get the cars maintenance records. As said, your car should have gotten 1 oil change per year, ie: 2009, 2010 & another some time this year. Indicated 13,000 kms means you need an oil change in 13K kms. However, you need another this year, or 12 months after the 2010 change.

Ok, I just changed my oil and filter last night... when you reset the service due lights (on the bc)... the mileage reads 23K kms or one years time - from that date, for your next oil service.

Brakes go up to 60K kms when reset.
