What's the deal with Apex's stock?
Ok, so I'm finally shopping for a set of dedicated track wheels, and I'm simply stunned that Apex is completely and utterly under- or out-of-stock on anything that fits a 1-series.
I've had my eye on the AERO-7s for a while, only to see that they have nothing but a hodgepodge of finishes/sizes left. I was told by their team that they are phasing that wheel out. "Fair enough," I thought. But then I look for ARC-8s or even the EC-7s, and those are also completely out of stock. Maybe it's track season and the wheels started flying off the shelves, but good grief, how do you run completely out of product?

APEX doesn't build wheels in house, they have them manufactured from out of the country. According to APEX, in 2014, there was a mix up in the wheels intended to be received by APEX, and what they actually got. From what I surmise, this included our E82 wheel fitments. Then, the ship yard labor disputes have put a damper all incoming stock of APEX wheels, again, including the 18x9.5 ET62 wheels, among others. APEX has had a dwindling/fluctuating stock of these wheels since early '14. Estimated arrival time is Summer '15.

Thanks for the info guys. Would have been nice if they had mentioned any of that when I first emailed them.

Ya, I ordered a set last fall when their website still said they were in stock. I was told "end of year '14," then "after the new year," followed by "quarter 2," and now "mid-to-late summer."
There's no way a shipping mix-up and the longshoremen labor dispute caused that kind of slippage unless they're completely incompetent -a reality I can't dismiss at this point. It's frustrating to watch them bump their vendor classifieds while ignoring unfulfilled orders for half of the forum. |

"Unfortunately, the AERO-7's are a wheel that we have been blowing out, and are planning to discontinue after they are completely sold out." So if you want two rear AERO-7s, you are either out of luck or at best you might be able to get them in two different finishes. It's all quite silly, to be honest.

Pretty disappointed in their motivation honestly. It's been a year, maybe over a year? You can't explain that kind of fulfillment issue with shipping errors.
What it actually sounds like to me is they are trying to phase out making wheels for the E82 fitments, and making it uncomfortable for people to buy from them to do it quietly. Evidence: new wheel PS-7 not offered in 1er fitment. AERO-7 being discontinued at least in our fitment. 1er Arc-8 and EC-7 interminably out of stock.

They don't even have 17 x 8.5 ET40 ARC-8s though, which is not a 1-series specific fitment. If you browse their site, almost everything I've looked at is out of stock/back ordered or odd stock (1 of this finish and 1 of that, etc...).
For as much praise as they get, and for as many folks as I see at the track running their wheels, I'm extremely unimpressed from a business operations standpoint.

Most people don't understand how big of an impact these port strikes are causing. Tires, which are more massively produced and shipped, are on 2+ month lead times. All due to port strikes. Unfortunately, the companies cannot do anything about this. This is a tough love moment, but perhaps not wait til peak season to order wheels |

No sweat off my back. I can wait, or I can find another company that wants my money. Failing to mitigate the risk to your supply, for such a long period of time, is a far bigger problem for them than for me. I was just confused because they have an excellent reputation. And FWIW, you are right, their customer-facing operations seem to be exceptional in many ways.
Regarding tires, are you referring the RE-71Rs? They are in stock in almost every size I've looked for, except the 245/40/17s. I haven't found any other tire options to be unavailable, at least in the sizes that fit the 135i, so I guess I'm just not seeing a disruption there.

I'm not sure I believe the port issue being the cause of all this. I work in an industry that has material coming in from overseas everyday, we get our material fairly quickly after it reaches port. Maybe they use a different method than we do that causes such a delay, who knows.

I doubt they will phase out the 1er fitments. The new 2 series has similar offsets to the 1ers and soon owners will want to track their cars or put wider rubber for sure.

Would be great if they responded here to give us the true story. I too have been looking at replacements for my existing Forgestars but the lack of variety from Apex for such an extended time hints to me that they are likely not going to be supporting the 1 anymore. FWIW VMR is close to the same situation for a number of their wheels for the 1. No ETA even.

Your best best is to call around and find a vendor that has a set sitting in their shop/warehouse somewhere. It's a shot in the dark but a lot of places buy big chunks of wheels and hold onto inventory. For example, I know Phils Tire Service has a stockpile of SpecE46 size ARC-8s which are 17x9 +42.

I was trying to get ARC-8s in 1-series offsets since last summer. They said wheels would be stocked in a few months, then it was October, no dice. They said before Christmas, nope. They the said shortly after new year for sure. Then I actually paid in full for 6 wheels. Then they said February. Then at end of Feb they said wheels are absolutely positive manufactured, they just didn't get shipped with the other wheels, but April for sure. Then in April they said they are having issues getting them manufactured... see they problem there... Then I cancelled my order.
I have called every vendor across the country that claims to sell Apex wheels. Nobody has 1-series offsets. Wait longer if you want, but don't be surprised if these wheels are never made again. I said I never would, but I ordered some F14 forgestars instead. |
