tempted to get 1

Being as impatient as I am, I have a chance to pick up a 135i speced close to how I want it... mainly color, 6spd manual, and sport package. On top of that it has some other goodies that I like.

But it has some other things that I didn't really want such as leather & it doesn not have the premium hifi... but I can upgrade this to better aftermarket stuff.

The biggest thing is that it has active steering... that may or may not work against it.

What are people's thoughts on this? Should I jump on it? or just order one spec'd the way I originally wanted.... such a long wait tho.

I heard that the 1 series has then newer version of Active Steering which has alot of the feel of the regular steering with the advantages of the Active Steering.

By deactivating traction and stability control, does that also deactivate the self steering in active steering and give me a more direct feel?

Active steering cannot be de-activated IIRC. You'll need to drive that car back to back with one without active steering to see if it's something you can live with.

Ask yourself: "Do I want to drive or do I want to be driven?"

I read somewhere that if all the electronic nannies are off, the Active Steering just keeps the variable steering ratio active... but from what you guys are saying, I guess this isn't true... that's too bad.

according to the E90 people, they where at first against it, now it seems they like it.... especially since the automatic steering correction is turned off when all the nannies are turned off.

In fact for normal driving (plan to be running 255 width tires front and back with sticky rubber... dropped) I would think the active steering will keep the car from tracking back and forth on the freeway... then when you get out to the track you switch everything off and just use the variable ratio to your advantage as you don't need to shuffle your hands back and forth.

I will see how the test drive goes.

Would getting the car lowered affect the way active steering works?

I drove an 08 550i with Active steering. It was like driving the old power steering Cadillacs...0 feel. All power. Hated it.

Agreed. Another thing you have to ask yourself is: "Do I want to pay for options I would not have otherwise paid for?"

That has to be a factor when negotiating an acceptable price.
