Has anybody looked at using HIR lights for the angle eyes rather than led or hid ?
Was looking at HIR bulbs and they are basically as white as a HID or LED but are more like a regular halogen in price. Problem is they are only made in a 9011 or 9012 fitment, can an 9011 or 12 be modified to fit H8 housing ?
Just wondering if this would be a better option than LED or HID as their almost as bright just as white yet cost 15 bucks rather than hundreds. What are your thoughts? Do a search on the bulbs pretty cool tech for what it is. Last edited by -c-; 07-08-2013 at 01:46 AM.. |

I used to modify H9 bulbs to fit H11 housings by cutting off a piece of metal tab. Should be possible if the base is the same size. Don't know on that count.

I added pics to help get the idea across.
I know H8 and 9012 both look similar just not sure how hard it is or even possible to modify one to work with our H8 DRL housing. if it was possible it be the best option as the heat output is the same as the halogen and the color is that of pure white and is 75 to over 100% brighter than the halogen counterpart yet cost only 20 bucks a set vs 100s with LED or HID solutions. this would probably look more like the newer 2013 5 series with their LED DRL's anybody with any expertise in this area? |

Yea they say its 48 watts so that's not as high as I thought, it uses a reflective property that makes the filament burn brighter yet not generate more heat. I guess it's called infrared reflecting its pretty neat. Supposedly brighter light without the drawbacks. It's not widely known and the patent GE has keeps other manufacturers from using it. So they get super bright without the drawbacks of high wattage because of the infrared reflecting tech. |

Id be more worried about the wiring holding up from the extra power draw.
The only way to tell if it will fit in the h8 housing would be to get a 90005/9006/9011/9012 bulb and compare.

Actually, I know someone who has h9 and 9011 bulbs in their car (honda) let me see I'd they would be willing to compare. I'll report back.

Well, bad news, the base of the bulbs are completely different. It might be possible to pull and switch the bases with the right tools, but I doubt that is a safe solution unless you're an electrical engineer.
Might be worth approaching the manufacturer and asking them to produce the HIR in H8 fit/wattage.

If you were going to do that I'd say more worth it to go H9 and resister in series to deal with the added power draw. Not sure if that would negate the benefit though.

Well our H8 are 35W, H11 is typically 55W, H9 I believe is 65W, I believe the HIR 9011/9012 follow a similar relationship to H11/H9, 55W vs 65W. The one side note is that HIR seems to be available in 45/48W as well.
Still don't know why they only made those bulbs in 9011 and 9012. From what I understand 55W and up is enough to melt our wiring.

Any possibility he or someone else could pull the bulb in a 9011 HIR and mate it to a H8 base?
