Check engine light on then off? Feedback please!

Hi guys I just got a 08 135i 6 speed with about 80k miles bone stock, 1 owner.

I was getting onto a onramp this evening after work and decided to gas it a bit and get some speed (45-55mph nothing crazy) during the time my check engine light came on, well half of it. It read "engine malfunction, reduced in speed, possible to continue, Have the problem get check out my your local BMW"
I then continue to drive about mile and got to the gym where I was heading too. I turn off the car, then I turn it back on after 2-3 min and the check engine light was gone. I did this a few times to make sure it does not come back.

I left the gym after 2 hours and no code and everything sounded and felt fine, I then push it again going home to see if the check engine will come back on at all and it did not.

I think it may be do to a coil pack?

Have you guys ever experienced anything like this?
Do you think I should go to the dealer and get it checked out?
What would the 1addicts family suggest?
Any feedback will help.
Thanks

Do you have an OBD II adapter to pull the codes? That would be the most help to you, honestly. Sounds like it could also be the HPFP, especially with an '08.

I don't have a obd2, I wish I did to see as well. That hpfp was also on my mind when I saw the check engine light come on :/

ive been having this same problem on and off.

it could be caused by ALOT of different things. literally no one case will be the same for having this error.

I get it in cold weather when I am revving it hard.

you will need to go to a mechanic shop (go early morning or in the evening when they are not busy) and have them pull codes that your car stored.

Just go to any Autozone/Advance Auto/Pep Boys/etc. and have them run the codes for you. They do it for free.

My Suzuki SUV throws O2 sensor codes like this. If I idle for a long time in traffic the check engine light comes on. Later it will go off, if I don't reset it first. Lots of codes will clear if the issue that caused the code goes away. But there should be a stored memory of it you can read. My favorite reader/reseter is Torque. $5

Here are my bets... because without the codes, that's all we can do .

Overboost related code - 3100

VANOS solenoids need cleaning/replacement

Had something similar happen on my '04 MINI way back when, scanned it and found a couple of misfire codes stored. I cleared them out, never saw them again. I attributed it to a tank of bad fuel.
