Well, it's certainly not a conventional cylindrical cylinder liner. More of a block within a block.

Definitely agreed. I read an article on the design of the N52 once. It was quite interesting. It's a unique little engine for sure. Supposedly the purpose of the aluminum insert is actually for corrosion resistance and not strength as the magnesium doesn't like water and coolant.

More like a liner, then a block within a block. Alusil liner, Mg and then Al around the Mg.

That would be correct. That N52 spec sheet goes into it in detail.

Also is why a lot of our engine related hardware is aluminum. Which is downright comical when you use it as you expect the bolt to have that typical steel heft, and instead it has the weight of plastic.

Just imagine if we had an aluminum chassis...

I'm sure it's just splitting hairs but there are only two components. The Alusil liner/inner block and the outer magnesium shell as shown in the picture:

"The crankcase consists of an aluminum/silicon insert which is cast inseparably in a magnesium alloy."

"The aluminum silicon insert provides the threaded connections for the transmission mounting, cylinder head and crankshaft main bolts. The insert provides the coolant passages as well. This is to prevent coolant contact with the magnesium portion of the engine block."

What are your plans for that last 150lbs? I suspect I'm somewhere around 3000-3050 currently, but I'm scratching my head for more sans panel swapping.

Currently I'm at 3052 w/a 1/4 tank in the car. It was weighed with ARC8s.

(Don't worry about the corner weights)

Figure if I do a custom exhaust (headers with a hi-flow car in the first section w/a burns muffler and dump mid-car I'd save perhaps 30-40 lbs?

Lightweight battery to a 15lb Braile (I'm nervous to go any lower). So I'd say around 35-40lbs

Racing Seats, I'd shave around 30 or so lbs per seat? Assuming stock manual seats weigh 55 lbs and I get to 25 lbs per seat w/hardware. So 60 lbs total there.

So right there I'm at 125 lbs reduction. I can start to get stupid from there and start swapping out for a hollow sway bar up front versus solid...etc etc.

I can also go BBK which may shed few pounds, but will greatly affect rotational inertia.

I think you will be shocked when you pull the stock collector/cat combo how light it is. I weighed them at the time along with the Supersprint replacements, and they were within a couple pounds of each other. Really really minor.

Battery I'm don't really want to do in a daily, plus modern BMWs are extremely sensitive to battery choice. I actually just added a few lbs here going from my stock 640 to a stock 720(640 was dying). 911 got a lightweight battery though.

Seats I would have a seriously hard time doing as well. Stock sport seats are such a nice all around seat, and as I've said many times before, easily outstrip the price point of the car. 911 once again will be getting them though.

^plus if you do fixed back seats you need to do a cage or at least roll bar, which negates a lot of the weight savings... and ruins the back seat... At which point, why are you using a four seater car?

I agree with you here. I love the stock seats, and have never found myself complaining about them. Comfortable on 3hr road trips too.

They are realllly good. 2 series sport seats are also phenomenal(IMO better than the M3/M4 seats).

If I dump the exhaust right after the cats, I'm saving a lot of pipe (plus a resonator and muffler)

With battery registration I can run a 15 lbs battery fine.

IMO the sport seats are uncomfortable, I'd rather daily Recaros any day over OEM seats.

Lets not forget, my car is a Lemon Law and therefore has a hit on the title. It isn't a "nice" car, as I beat the living crap out of it every weekend and will run it to the ground.

Because it is a SCCA STX Car. That is why.

This is my end goal.

Plus, you can run a 4-point harness w/those seats and w/out a rollcage. I'm not getting into that argument because it isn't worth it.

"Power shifting" is idiotic anyways, so I would say your 1-2 shift is ideal.

Is that sound coming from the headers too or mostly the exhaust? Sounds great
