Exclamation former BMW Eisenach factory museum...

AWE – Automobilwerk Eisenach

Automobilbaumuseum
Automobile Production Museum
99817 Eisenach
Rennbahn 6-8 (Sparkasse Building)

Phone: (0) 3691 / 7 72 12

Opening times:
Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm
Closed on Mondays

Eisenach is kind of the forgotten BMW Museum. I have been wanting to go here for a long time. I almost did not make it in time, but more about that in a moment. Eisenach has produced many automobiles over the years: Wartburg, Dixi, BMW, EMW, IFA and Opel. BMW did not like the fact that in Eisenach they produced cars even before BMW ever did. And they were using their logo. So… the East German government changed the name to EMW and went with a red and white propeller design/logo. The rest as they say is history.

Today, Opel produces cars (the Corsa model) in Eisenach. And BMW has a small steel stamping/press factory here too.

Eisenach is near Erfurt. My TomTom told me to take the A73 Autobahn to the A71 and then I would drive the bundestrasse B88 into Eisenach. But like always when I drive into the former East Germany… what looks like a short distance on the map becomes a long journey! It did not help I was running low on fuel and looking for an Esso so I could buy tax free fuel. I ended up wasting a lot of time. I did end up finding an Esso in Suhl. And then I was on my way to Eisenach. I got to the museum just fifteen minutes before they closed for the day. So… I was a busy beaver with my camera! The museum curator was nice enough to let me stay a little bit beyond the 5pm closing time. I then took quite a few pictures of the outside of the building and old press stamping machine. In the end it was worth it! I think I took some nice pictures. You guys tell me!

Even though the back roads (Bundesstrasse) were really nice to drive thru, I think next time I will just stick to the autobahn. Even though that way is slightly longer… it is sure to be a faster way.

AWE – Automobilwerk Eisenach Museum has only been open for five years. They have plans to renovate the old factory (next door). It’s the one with all the windows broken out of it. It has a real old world charm to it. I also like how they have kept the old façade of the entry building – where the old check point was. It makes quite an impression. The curator told me that right now the museum only has cars on display on the first floor. But they have plans to showcase more restored cars on the second and third floors. That will happen over the next few years. You can tell the museum is still evolving.

Enjoy my photos,
Dackel

Beautiful post as usual David, thanks for putting it up!

Kinda spooky those B&W shots of the outside of the front gate from back in the day...

Very nice pictures. I have seen an EMW and a few BMWs 7 DIXIs that were made there.

The company that made the big stamping press is still in business.

Thanks Ian.

Eisenach has had a storied past. First occupied by the Americans. Then handed over to the Russians. Then the Russian’s handed it over to the GDR (German democratic Republic, aka DDR East Germany. That was when BMW got the East Germans to change the name to EMW, instead of using BMW logo and name. BMW could not do this while the Russians were the legal owners. It is all so interesting.

The Russians had a plan to steal a lot of the German technology during the last days of WWII. They took heavy presses and designs. To this day I think the Russians still produce their version of the K35 (?) WWII motorcycle.

Yes… those B&W front gate shots are a glimpse back in time. Its funny how the main building has not changed much. Typical German.

Dackel.

PS: In a day or two... I have another GREAT small car mseum to show you guys!

Outstanding !

Very thoughtful of you to share these great pieces of history. The Dixi pictures are really If I read my history correctly weren't these the first cars BMW made ?

I'm seeing a theme developing for the next European vacation....visit all the BMW factories. Wife is afraid I'll leave her behind....hmmmmm. At the end of a long day touring, relax with some fine local bier.

Thanks again for the great pictures, story, and production summary.

Servus Dackel,

nice Pics and Story, like allways

Youre right... the Russians build that Motorcycle today (Ural Motorcycle).

My Grandpa got one of these old Military BMW Bikes (like on the Photo with the Soldier and the MG). It was the first Vehicle after the War Unfortunatly he crashed into a Wood Truck... My Grandpa, Grandma and my Mom with her two Sisters in the Sidewagon... Fortunately the all survived the Chrash (my Mom broke her Head). The Truck Driver was drunken an they were on the way in Holliday

The Truck Driver came at the End of the Story without any punishes.... he was the Son of a local Major. 5 years later he crashes again...again drunken. The opposit Car Driver died... again without punishes. Short time later the Truck Driver drove into a Lake to kill himself... after all he was succesfull.

But that was -->

Greetz

Thanks Marco for that funny/interesting story.

I need more ideas for more AutoMuseums to go visit/photograph! I'm running out of places to go see! I think I have been to them all. Well... I still know of a few good ones in Italy! That is a short drive!
