I'm using an iPhone on iOS 13.2.2, and it worked on iOS 12 as well. It even displays the Spotify track info the stereo screen.
It also works just using an old iPod Classic (you can navigate the album/artist list using the buttons on the stereo, although it's a pain if you have a large music collection).

I've checked my VIN for features/options, and my car includes "S6FLA USBAudio Interface". I don't know whether that was standard equipment or an option.

I don't have the iDrive (not sure if that matters).

Here is a picture of the car if anyone is curious. It's my first BMW!

My first addition(s) to the car will be returning to OEM blue badges. And ditching the black factory 17's (powder coated by PO). Any ideas on wheels? I'm thinking a bronze would look cool on the black.

Interesting- do you only use the USB, or also the AUX with that special "Y" cable?

I only use a USB cable - don’t need the AUX. On the underside of the armrest there’s also a pouch. I keep a 120 GB iPod Classic in there. It works the same way as the iPhone - just plug it into the USB port and control it via the stereo or steering wheel.

See Pages 24-26 of the attached user manual (courtesy 1addicts.com). This is the setup in my car.

I think the Y-cable was required only for very old iTunes files that used DRM, which I believe Apple stopped using around 2009.

Man, I just checked out your build thread. I envy your 6 speed/sport package combo I searched every nook and cranny for a 128i M sport coupe with 6 speed, but apparently it’s a pretty rare combo. Nice car!

I go to UCF maybe I’ll see you around.

You connect the iPhone to the USB, then on the radio you select the source as "iPod", and it thinks the phone is an iPod. You can play Spotify, iTunes, etc. You can even control it using the steering wheel controls. It will also announce turn-by-turn directions from Waze or Google Maps over the stereo speakers.
I tried plugging into the USB port with my iPhone and I'm getting some sort of "Incompatible device" notification on the screen. I know iPhone cords can be finicky, but not sure what the problem is. I will buy a new cord and try.

Went sliding around with some DSC off fun in this storm

Also changed out the aging stock D1S bulbs to GT Ultra. First time trying these, they have extremely good reviews in HID testing and I'm pleased so far. Way better output than the 7 year old stock bulbs.

I have that. It works fine. BUT, to use the other features of the car with iDrive, you need to unplug it.

Bluetooth works great for hands-free calls when necessary.

Thanks man. I hope to contribute on here to the best of my abilities with the limited knowledge I have on these things.

And yes, as it turns out this is the case with the bluetooth. You can only receive calls through the bluetooth, no streaming music. Oh well, I do have the aux. hookup and USB connection. I think the aux sounds better anyway.
Correct. No music streaming.

I got a Tunai Firefly Bluetooth to aux adapter on Amazon. Works and sounds great! Clarification - I'm on Android.
However, I also discovered that the USB port under the armrest. does not provide 5v power for it.

You gotta love the Ipod classic. I've had three, 2x160g + 1x120g. My last one started playing up early this year. It went out of production I think late 2014, now I'm restricted to mere flash sticks. Sure you can get flash sticks that big now but their user-friendliness factor is nothing compared to the Ipod. Since then, anything Apple has been nothing but fluff.

Sorry, I got side-tracked with the previous post. Today I ditched the run-flat tyres and I now have normal tyres all-round. From my limited drivng done today the car did seem to crash and bash over uneven roads a little less, whether or not this is real or imagined, only time will tell. At the very least, I'm happy to have matching tyres front & rear.

My car has power to that USB port. Might want to check the connection under the console, they have a tendency to get disconnected.

Installed 1M inspired gauge faces and swapped the amber LEDs to white. Really loving this view from the cockpit!
