So no the fact that we sell parts is not a factor.

Stock charge pipe being a weak component and failing even under stock boost is a fact.

I respect their opinion as well, and with all due respect they are wrong.

Another red flag for me is that you mentioned in your first post that they told you a piggy could damage the charge pipe but a flash does not. This shows that they do not have enough experience or knowledge on this subject. The fact whether the ECU knows the actual boost would not have any effects on the charge pipe.
I have 93K miles on my car. It has been under stock boost until 2 years ago when I got BMW PPK1, which is more boost.

Mine has not failed in 93K miles. For my application, I will take the advice from both the tuner and in the indy shop I use. Must not be a weak point on my car.

I guess we disagree.

Nothing wrong with respectfully disagreeing

i have 100k on mine running 20psi boost, my stock charge pipe did not fail when i changed to an aftermarket one.
When i say weak component, it does not mean every CP will fail the day you add a tune. It means out of the x amount of tuned cars, there is a high ratio of charge pipes failing.

I would also double check with your shop about the point he brought up with flash vs piggy and how it would change any effect on the charge pipe.

I'm not going to get more info from my shop about the boost effects on the charge pipe.
I've related the info in an honest manner to the readers on this site. I did say in a previous thread, I have an N54 not a N55, so maybe there is a difference. But I will not be changing out mine.

Any word on my Mishimoto intercooler that I ordered May 31? #1056
You can email me an update, you should still have it.

We've seen chargepipes break on cars without tunes and cars with. Anyone who claims you don't need one while running more than OEM boost levels doesn't have enough experience with this platform.

Then I must have a miracle chargepipe. 93K and mine is fine.

My car is nearing 60K, just a week or so ago, my charge pipe exploded a couple minutes after leaving my apartment. I turned onto a road, hit the gas and heard a pop. Luckily I was close enough to home that I nursed it back but the charge pipe can fail stock. The stock pipe is garbage, just replace it with a metal pipe for peace of mind.

lol.. I'm getting a real "charge" out this chargepipe discussion. I had a feeling we were headed in this direction. Disagreeing with fellow modders is a no no.

na... I'm keeping my stock pipe. I like living dangerously.

Here's hoping my car doesn't explode.... lol

A quick google search for "n54 chargepipe failure" brings up lots and lots of results. Some stock cars, some with tunes (both flashes and piggybacks). If you want to take a chance with the stock one that's perfectly fine. As Mike said, just because a part is likely to fail does not mean that it is going to. You may never have to deal with it, but it's pretty clear that it's a common issue with these cars. I'm not sure how you can argue against that.

There is no comparison between PPK 1 and any real tune/piggyback btw.

There have been how many 135's produced between 2008 and 2013?
How many have had a failed chargepipe?

They have been known to fail on stock boost... so this is a proper question.

10% failure rate... maybe 15% failure rate. I doubt it's close to either number.

People with issues post. People with no issues post alot less, if at all. So your google search option doesn't really prove anything other than there has been some failures.

Do I think the chargepipes Mike sells on extreme power house are better then the stock pipe. yes, absolutely.

Does that mean the stock pipe is inadaquate and will crack and fail. Absolutely not.

I trust the advice I was given from two sources that have no reason to have me get it or not. They just said it was not needed in my case and I should be fine. They also told me that if I wanted it thats fine also. I was given honest advice.

Yes, of course they are much different. But it has been mentioned here that they have been known to fail on stock boost.

Mike also said that he replaced his stock chargepipe at around 100K to upgrade. Not because the stock one failed.

Hello, just want to give you my feedback on charge pipes.

I have been running a Kraftwerk tune for a year which produced about 236RWKW and the charge pipe never had any issues.

As soon as i switched over to a JB4 running in map2 - had about 253RKWK and the charge pipe broke the second day of driving (under acceleration).

Must have been the extra boost? still waiting for the new pipe to be installed this Friday, meanwhile I am okay to drive around keeping the car below 2000RPM.

Hopefully this helps in your decision making

Thanks Nick. Was the Kraftwerk tune a flash?
