I'm wondering what the data would look like if sorted by vehicle mileage rather than year. The incidence of pump failure could be more related to length of actual use than any specific model year, e.g., are model year 20XX vehicles more prone to failure, or vehicles with more than XX,XXX miles on them?

Siemens was purchased by Continental in mid-2007. My 2008 had a Siemens WP from the factory. The pump I replaced it with was a Conti WP. I wonder when Conti branded pumps started getting out fitted on our cars or if that has anything to do with it at all...

I can not believe the 2008's have close to a 50% failure rate.

Since my first post on here my mileage has increased. I am still rolling strong on the OEM pump at roughly 53k.

I have a theory for the pump failure. Dack we might need another poll added to this thread. I think that we should add something about upgraded fmic's. See who has one and if their pump has failed. There might be a connection between the two seeing as how the fmic helps keep the turbos cooler. So it could potentially lessen the strain on the water pump. My idea could be wrong but it might be the extra variable that we are missing to determine the cause of failure.

2009 135i M sport

51,000 kms and water pump failed.

No warning, just a yellow temp light then 15 seconds later it turned to red, 95% loss of power and barely enough time to drive to the side of the road. Aftermarket warranty paid for a new pump.

Jan 2008 build N54 135i, pump failed at 55,000 miles.
Cost to replace pump, thermostat, and coolant was $715 from BMW dealership (needed parts the same day). I replaced the parts myself. Not too difficult and you get a free shower out of it!

I think just by looking at the data/numbers... BMW must have changed the waterpump supplier bc the failure rate was so high for 2008's and '09's... while for later model years its so much lower.

Would be nice to somehow confirm my theory.

Older cars = more time at temperature.

Would be nice if there is a new and more reliable supplier, and your theory were correct.

Would be good if someone pulling an old broken one could fully document and photograph it vs the new one.

For x28s there's three part numbers for water pumps. Means, they changed it several times. I wonder if the last one actually fixes the issue.

Hey all,

Pretty sure my water pump has just died

Did anyone experience the noise in this video? Mine does exactly the same thing along with the fans on full power and all the other signs pointing to a water pump.

Yup its dead. That was the sound mine was making when I did the priming process. Took it to the dealer and they changed it under CPO.

I got my 128i (March 2008 build) used. How do I know if the waterpump has been replaced? Is there something visual I could see or is it a "dealer only knows" thing?

Thanks, and if it is original, No problems yet with 125000 km.
