I want an S54 in my 128i
https://www.usedbmwengines.us/used-S54-engines
I wonder how much of a pain it would be to get it working 100%. All the gauges, traction control...The whole shebang. Anyone have a story of this or also thinking about it? |

The old racers Q&A, How fast do you want to go? How much money do you have?
It would take more money, time and trouble to do it then it's worth. IMO You'd have to swap out the whole driveline including the trans, driveshaft, diff, axles. Suspension and improved brakes would be needed to handle the extra weight power. I doubt all these necessary parts wouldnt even fit without major mods. Then the nightmares of fuel and electrical begins. It would be a lot cheaper, better and easier to sell the 128 and buy a good E46 M3. But some guys like to do these transplant sleeper cars but they Usually are guys who are in the wrenching business and do it themselves.

Anything is possible given enough time and money!
I bet it's a pretty simple bolt in.

I really want my 1er to feel like that NA high rpm motor. Are there cam options for the N51? I have searched around and found nothing. I believe the S54 was the pinnacle of the NA I6 but I love the feel and aesthetic of the 1.

Look up BPC (bimmer performance center). If you have money to spend, you can do MILVs, headers, full exhaust, an N54 intake manifold, and custom tune. This should get you to 300hp (or more) with good high RPM shove. Will be way cheaper than an s54.

I have been reading about them on the boards, but I haven't heard anything about them producing an 8k rpm N51 or N52. I will give them a call and see what my options are.

Well personally my plans were to drop a s65 if i were to do a swap, its only what like a 1000-1500 more for the engine....s54 is a beautiful engine but if you're going to get your hands dirty, might as well go bigger. just my 2 cent.

You must really enjoy changing rod bearings.

S54 is an amazing motor, but it's a brick. You thought under-steer was bad now? Just you wait...
N52 was painstakingly design for lightness and high-rpm fun. Plus, it doesn't eat rod bearings. 184k miles on mine, and it feels great on the track...

I get it. I love the N51 in my car and I'm moving toward a performance tune (AA). I use to have the M50 and there were so many cam and tuning options that it was easy to take that little 2.5 and turn it into an 8500 rpm 2.8 liter. I guess I'm stuck in nostalgia and should just be happy that I still have a NA I six.

OP, there was an N52 on here with cams (Schrick?) and a bunch of other upgrades that was pushing well beyond 300 wheel and had a way higher redline as well. He was a UK fellow and it was a pure race car (no street use). I can't find the post, but I remember seeing it on here as I was on the search for high output mods on my N51. For now, I am just getting it tuned with headers and the exhaust, working more on suspension for twisties.
