Pure Gas
Could I run Ethanol Free gas (94 Octane) in a 2012 135i? Is so, would it give me any boost? Would the computer adjust for this gasoline? What does it do?

Ethanol free gas is standard in many countries (like Australia). It won't do any harm.
Ethanol has higher octane (you can compress it more before it explodes) but lower specific energy (you need more of it for the same power) - so Ethanol free gas will either be lower octane, or more expensive because it's more refined gas. It's important in recreational boating (because Ethanol absorbs water, so a boat sitting on the water for 6 months with 10% ethanol in it becomes contaminated with water in your gas) and flying because ethanol can cause vapor locks in aircraft engines at altitude. For your car, 94 octane "ethanol free" gas will give you roughly the same performance as 94 octane, 10% ethanol 90% gas mix. You might get slightly better MPG. |

There's a supermarket chain that carries 91 octane gas with no ethanol added in my area that has decent prices.
Do a search on this site for 100% gasoline stores in your area: http://www.buyrealgas.com/ I tend to go a couple of tanks on top tier - 10% Ethanol max (Shell or QT) then every third tank fill up with straight gasoline. Hope this helps. |

"Very useful information. I will begin my search. Raw gas is also far better in yard equipment ie chain saws, weed walkers... I want to put this gas in just before storing for the colder months."
Just did the search and there are no locations, for this link, in my area. We do have Murphy's, which is not that far away from where I live, that I can use. Thanks for the link. |

Yeah - have a Honda lawn mower (with VTEC stickers ; -) - it HATES ethanol in gas, I have to run it on 100% gasoline.
Forgot about using gasoline to 'pickle' a methanol fueled engine (Offys in particular). Found this on GRM's board: "Methanex sells it DIRT cheap ($1.32/gallon Gulf Coast price) so long as you buy it 60 gallons at a time. It's natural-gas derived; for the same amount of energy as a gallon of gasoline you're paying around $2. It burns very well once the engine starts. Allowable compression ratios in large spark-ignition engines are as high as 17:1 (Offenhauser, 1955) and slightly rich mixtures can give exceptional power figures. As there is only one component to the fuel, it will not have the light fractions gasoline has to enable easy cold starting. A fuel heater may be hazardous if done improperly but will save much kicking or auxiliary battery use. It absorbs a lot of heat to vaporize, on the same order as water, and Indycars were able to do away with intercoolers when running it. Methanol is hygroscopic; do not let it sit outside of a very well sealed metal container for long. Motorcycle tanks are inadequate for this purpose; calculate the fuel you'll burn and don't leave a huge reserve before filling it before a ride. It attacks magnesium, aluminum, zinc, and rubber ferociously; in many race vehicles "pickling" with gasoline is performed by hooking a fuel hose to a small gas tank and running until it stalls. Methanol-impervious systems exist." Last edited by atr_hugo; 04-20-2018 at 12:02 PM.. |

Just buy the highest octane unleaded gas you can without emptying your bank account.
