motor sound from inside car when opening doors
When I open the car doors there is a faint sound I hear from inside that car that sounds like a motor or something. This sound lasts only for a fraction of a second. Does anyone know what this sound is?

Could it be the electric steering wheel lock? Thatīs the only thing I hear when opening the door (other than the central locking of course)
Itīs the sound of an electric actuator. Something like swoshclick Or clickswosh depending on wether youīre getting in or out. I have the noise when getting out also (slightly different), but then Iīve got CA which may give the procedure a different timing. |

I heard it, too, but kinda wrote it off as just another thing the car was up to...

I'm pretty sure that opening the door does not send a signal to prime the fuel system |

so when you opened the door, the car's computer was thinking "gosh the door's open I better get ready to start the car"
Not questioning your observations but that seems like a silly thing for VW to program the car to do. might have something to do with the quality problems they were/are having |

Not sure if it is related to the quality problems but to be honest, the car treated me well and I really enjoyed driving it....but the BMW will obviously be in a different league.
I actually heard from more than one service manager that this was the case. I could really care less other than worrying about it doing it from the time it was new. The other thing the car used to do from the get go was run with a bit of a different exhaust note and slight vibration on cold starts for about 30 seconds. THis is also related to a thread I read here lately. The tech. guys at VW said this had something to do with ecu settings for emissions. |

i can back JVfan on this since i had a 02 vw gti and it made that noise when you open the driver's door and i've read about it on vw boards saying it is to do with the fuel line. it's normal for vw, not sure about bmw. my 95 gti doesn't do that though.

After the doors close, you wait a minute or two, and something electrical activates. I hear it when I am hanging around the car after I get out. |

my sister's 99 jetta had that noise you guys were talking about for the VW's --at first i thought that's what it was in my car too, but after hearing it a few more times, it actually sounds like the familiar whir of an optical drive --I think it was the nav disc spinning up. There's also a faint buzz that comes from the speakers (with a faint speaker 'pop' when it goes off). I have no clue as to why this would happen when you open your doors --the iDrive getting a head start booting up maybe? I mean afterall, it is running Microsoft Win-blows CE right?
