Turbos lag?

So the 135 is my first turbo car so go easy on me on this one..... Do all turbo cars have some sort of lag? I mean there might be some sort of difference between low end to high end right? The response rate of the turbos should be a little better respectively? When driving my friends GTR I was thrown back in the seat a bit faster than my 1.

There is a lag, but it's minimal compared to most turbo cars.

Btw GTR = 480 hp vs 135i = 300hp.

You SHOULD be pushed much harder in a GTR.

There's always going to be some degree of lag. The impellers in the turbos can't reach speed instantly no matter how good they are. BUT...what you're feeling in the 135i isn't the physical lag from the turbo, so much as the way they are controlling the boost with the software.

Yeah for the most part you will feel a perceptible lag from turbo's. Manufacturer's have gotten much, much better at decreasing this lag over the years. That lag can be from the boost controller's, turbo size and bearing type..how far away it is from the manifolds, number of turbo's, length of tubing, back pressure, waste gates, etc, etc, etc....it can sound complicated but you will understand better what goes on with turbo engines if you order this:

not only is there little lag on the 135i, the direct injection & high compression make it even less than a typical turbo

if you want to experience bad lag, try an older turbo car without direct injection, and with lower compression and higher boost

I hope we're not confusing throttle input lag from the drive-by-wire vs. turbo lag, because there is also that delay.

My saab turbo has no detectable lag, unless Im driving it in such a way that the turbo is not spooled (e.g. ultra-low RPM criusing, near lug-zone for max MPGs).

Then again, it is only a 7psi turbo, and is designed for low inertia, fast spool.

My MB turbodiesel on the other hand has a decent amount of lag, because it is bigger and goes to higher pressure. Installing a boost controller helped it, but it still isnt that fast.

I drove the 135i, and the turbo helps to move the car with a gentle touch of the throttle, far more easily than the same style applied to the 128i. Yes, it takes a second to really build it up if you slam the throttle, but it is definitely not bad - there is a good second or so more lag on my brother's 3000GT VR4.

If you want to get a good example of turbo lag, find someone with an old 1978 or 1978 Porsche 930.

They are a truly a scary car to drive aggressively. Step on the throttle, count to three, or four, or five...... then feel like someone just lit a rocket behind your car. It's all lots of fun, as long as your going in a straight line.

I am surely not as experienced as many on this board, but I find the turbo lag with the 135 to be very minimal. My experience with turbos on modern German cars has been pretty good. My 06 GTI has little lag as well.

The 135 is in another class though because of the dual turbos of course. The GTI runs out of steam at 5,000 or so.

I have seen some on this board say the 135 runs out of gas there too. Man I don't see it. That second turbo hits somewhere in there and my car just keeps screaming to red line. It pulls a lot better in higher revs than my GTI, which is still a darned good car for the money.

jpick, the turbos on the 135 work in tandem, not sequentially. They both come on about 1,400 rpm and maintain 300 lb/ft of torque till 5,000 rpm, after which torque levels off and begins to fall.

A little off topic but just wanted to point out the gt-r 35 has no perceptable turbo lag. The 997 porsche turbo(i drove the auto) had turbo lag even though manufacture claims there is no lag in this model cuz they used some new tech like vtg(they really sucked me into buying that bull shit).You could definitely feel it kick in after 3k rpm but then it kept pulling hard all the way to the red line.

that's not really what turbo lag is

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but I do get some kind of lag right after a shift. It does it sometimes, not sure what the hec is that about.
It sometimes happen in high rpm or low.
