BMW 1M Coupé in Rally!
Last saturday I filmed this brand new BMW 1M in rally specs.
The engine is a combination of the 130i and E46 M3 engine. Front 360mm 6 pots and rear 330mm 4 pots brakes. More specifications of the car: http://www.ovdgroeprallyteam.nl/de-auto.html When you are interested and I got more footage of the car I will post it in this topic.

Thats pretty sweet.
I wonder what type of chassis setup they have. The 1 series isnt really suited to rally, but it looks quick. How are they doing? |

Interesting motor- 130i magnesium block with the high flow E46 M3 cylinder head. I didn't know that head, designed for an 87mm bore, would fit onto the 85mm bore N52 block... Gotta figure it's making 340+ normally aspirated HP and it saves 75 lbs over our motors, all in the nose. That'll help it put power down too- very tricky.

They have to change a lot to the suspension, dampers, transmission, etc.. to get all the power well on the road. Right now it was too wild and hard to drive.

Seems like a weird choice for a rally car, even among available RWD chassis. You'd think an E36 build would be WAY, WAY cheaper, not to mention lighter. But cool to see nonetheless.

He drove a Compact M3 before, there was a small cup of that cars. Also very hard to drive, but a spectacular sound.
They didn't choose the cars because they are the quickest/easiest to drive, then you buy a Lancer EVO/Impreza or even a WRC.

My point about the 1M being unsuitable for rally was not that it would be hard to drive, but heavy and very expensive for something with a very high likelihood of ending up in a ditch! I mean, this obviously is not a manufacturer-supported team, so I would think cost-cutting would've been more of a priority.
