Installing Homelink...
Just got back to Houston from my ED, and it's going to be a long 4 weeks waiting for this car!
The one thing I'm disappointed in is the lack of Homelink, which I've gotten used to having on my 335i. Has anyone talked to their dealer about fitting the Homelink mirror to their 1M? Are the Homelink mirrors compatible between the various models? I'm planning on selling my 335i when the 1M shows up, and it would be great if I could just swap the mirrors on the cars beforehand. |

I will be doing this once I take delivery in a couple months. The mirrors are interchangeable across models, so you just need to find a Homelink mirror from any recent BMW.
The remaining question is whether the existing wiring already has everything needed or if we have to tap into more power. I'm hoping with the auto dimming mirror in the premium package, it will be a simple mirror swap. If anyone wants to help out and already has a car in the garage, take the plastic cover off the mirror housing (splits apart on the bottom - no tools required) and see how many wires are going into the harness. My other car with Homelink and Compass has 7 wires. So to be complete, we need to know the number of wires in the harness for: 1) Cars without Premium package 2) Cars with Premium, without Convenience 3) Cars with Premium, with Convenience |

It can be retrofitted, although the mirrors are not cheap at the dealer. You can find them on ebay. The newer mirror's have a much smaller "clown nose" for the alarm system.
I am going to go this route below and ask them to provide a mirror with the Homelink and the mute button in one of the Homelink button locations. http://www.radar-mirror.com/Store_V1_Mirrors.html |

All cars these days should be pre wired for it. It's a plug and play installation. If for some reason your car isn't, I'll try to locate a part number for a retrofit harness you can get at the dealer. It's a pretty cheap harness with easy installation for cars with out pre wire. I haven't seen any of those needed since '07 models. Any homelink mirror from any BMW will work. Some have the stealth compass too which is nice, along with the smaller clown nose. I'll research a little on the harness...

I am also interested in this retro fit. Very disappointed the 1M doesn't come with it.

I installed mine last weekend after ordering a new [expensive] mirror online. I ended up ordering Part No. 51169174309 (EC / LED / GTO / remote), avoiding the electronic compass.
My 1M has both Premium and Convenience packages, so I did not need to use a retrofit wire (61120434330). The existing wire powers everything. I found an online picture on how to remove and install the mirror. The only tricky part was removing the plastic covers at the base that surround the rain sensor. More than likely, you will end up breaking some of the small plastic fasteners, so you may want to also order a replacement set (51167076129). The only downside to the new mirror is the "clown nose", which is a bit larger and red in color (similar to my E60 M5), rather than the smoked color original. |

There are several options for the rear view mirrors.
EC = Electrochromatic Radio = Radio-wave remote control LED = Light-emitting diode for alarm system GTO = Integrated remote control/garage door opener FLA = High-beam assistant Compass = Digital compass display ETC = Electronic Toll Collection TLC = Out-of-lane warning You may be able to find a match by searching through the parts inventory, comparing RealOEM vs. BMW of South Atlanta (who has a great online site). As far as compatibility, you may need to refer back to your dealer. |
