Adding a dipstick is an awesome innovation, but unfortunately not enough to make me buy a F20. I really hope the trend continues to other models.

F20 dip stick...
F20 116i/118i dip stick CONFIRMED!
Now we just need to find out IF BMW will produce the rest of the lineup with a traditional dip stick. ??? This 118i was taken at the BMW Niederlassung in Leipzig today. |

So... on Tuesday I went back to the IAA for a 2nd look at that oil dip stick. I had a nice talk with the BMW advisor there. He told me that the F20 is the first BMW to get a real oil dip stick, but that other engines and BMW models will follow suit. The reason he told me was that many BMW customers did not understand how to use the BC to check teh oil level... and were frustrated that there was not a "real" dip stick, So now we have both!
This is quite a change for BMW to back track. But I think it is a good move. A dip stick provodes more info that just the oil level. Like what the oil looks like and smells like. All important things when deciding on when to change one's oil. |

I could care less about having a physical dipstick. I mean really, is it that important to have? It's not like you have no way to check the oil level. Anyway, weird that the exhaust and intake sides of the 118i engine pictured are opposite of those of all other BMW inline engines. It would seem that it's the Mini turbo engine turned longitudinally; i.e., rotated counter-clockwise 90* when viewed from the front.

There are plenty of BMW owners who want an(return to a traditional) oil dip stick. I am one of them. A dip stick provodes more information than just the oil level. ie: like what the oil looks like and smells like, feels like in your fingers. All important things when deciding on when to change one's oil or buying a used car with unknown oil or OCI's.

Just curious to test you guys BMW product knowledge... but what was the first BMW model to do away with the traditional oil dip stick? I think it was the e39 M5, but I could be wrong. Anyone know for sure?
