Thinking of new Daily Driver

Hi Everyone,

I drive my 1M on the weekends and my daily driver is a 2006 Acura RSX Type-S. I've been thinking of picking a new (or additional) daily driver that's a bit more fun. I'm considering ...

1. 2012/13 Audi TT-RS
2. 2007/08 Audi RS4
3. E46 M3
4. E39 M5
5. 2013 135is

I don't imagine any of these vehicles will be easy to find in decent condition/low mileage, but I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you.

P.S. Pictured is my 1M.

Having owned an 2007 RS4 as my previous car i would vote for that. Only downsides are horrible fuel economy and you will likely get frustrated not being able to rev that beautiful V8 to 8000 rpm in traffic. With coil overs it handles extremely well.

I agree RS4 for daily. I also like the MK7 GTI a lot. Cheap fun and cool. They come with a 6 year warranty and my wife's MK7 has been very nice. I would go for the base cloth seat no sunroof model. I wouldn't own two bmws even though I own two right now. Too many problems. 135 will cost almost same as 1M to maintain. E46 headliner and stuff will come off and be expense. Audi V8 also expensive but super cool and worth it. So GTI brand new can is pretty nice for a daily.

Just drive the 1M daily. It's what they're made for. Use that 'extra' car money and maintain the 1M really well and you will enjoy every day with it.

I understand completely, mine was being used daily and as much as I loved it, it was spending so much time sitting in painful stop/start traffic, easing out the clutch, easing in the clutch, trying to avoid people in their Camry’s desperately cutting in front of me trying to get home 30secs faster to just sit down on the couch and do nothing anyway.

I wasn’t enjoying putting my little car through that. And I also think a little differently to some, I don’t think if it as an investment, it doesn’t really qualify for it here in Aust anyway, but the car feels so perfect to me that I’ve for the first time, not thought about selling it after three years. So now my head is saying, keep this special little car, for a long time, and I don’t want to wear it out on rubbish driving. I want it to always be able to sing!!!

I bought a cheap little MkV GTI cos I just love ‘em, and it’s great for all the mundane stuff and it makes the mundane stuff not so....

And the 1M now is super enjoyable each and every time it goes out. Problems solved. And aging parents can actually get out of the Golf..

I’ve owned the first 3 on your list, including 2 RS4s (sedan and cab). I’d cast another vote for an RS4, but would also toss out an E9x for consideration. I daily an E90 M3 comp pack and love it...plus, you have the option of DCT. All my other cars are manual, so it’s nice to have something to take into traffic.

Money no object I totally agree but those two cars are expensive and somewhat special. For me a daily driver should fun but practical. Mileage and maintenance are bad on those two. The MK7 GTI is fun inexpensive and looks cool yet practical. You can park it in the dirt lot at the kids soccer tournament and not sweat it. The Dual clutch transmission is as good if not better than bmw and more reliable too. The apple connectivity and screen is better placed and easier to use than bmws which adds to the daily enjoyment. So for full daily driving the GTI is a standout. I have owned both mkV and MK7. Steering feel aside the MK7 is much better I also recommend the cloth seats if you live in hot climate like me.

Low mileage 128i with a manual.

You already know how to work on 90% of the car and it's far more reliable than the 1M or 135. They're comfortable, good highway cruisers, and way more fun on city streets than they should be. 24 mpg with mixed spirited driving is easily achievable. What's a better DD than that?

If you're spending low-mileage E46 M3 money, you might as well get a Civic Type R with a few thousand miles on it. You'll get the remainder of the warranty and an ultra-reliable, fun toy.
