What mfg's?
What additives? Quantities?
Why 1500?

Not true. Fuel doesn't 'breakdown' oil, it just thins it for the most part. Bad news for bearings. Oil breaks down from shearing, ph changes, etc. Direct injection is the best thing for oil contamination since injectors. It's much better than MFI.

Most if not all of you don't trust them w/ OCI's so why trust them w/ oil brand? Trust is subjective. Numbers don't lie. I would much rather know what my nickel content is(etc) than believe some schmuck on a forum.

That's not at all what they're saying over at BITOG.org regarding DI engines...just the opposite in fact. Do I know this for a fact based off my own scientific research? No. But I have a habit of listening to the guys who actually do perform the research, and there is quite a few of those types over there.

Gotta go with Amsoil, i've had just too many good experiences, and too much good luck, with it.

hey there is no dipstick in the car so why worry about oil  and BMW builds performance cars so they must research there oil type and service interval for cars that are being flogged around all the time.....right?...........or maybe their 15000 mile interval is so they spend 1/3 as much on the 4 years free maintenance. and maybe the savings on the cheep oil and long oil change interval is way more than the warranty claims will be from the enthusiast that really drive the car. and what ever happens after the warranty well that was just from people abusing the cars. (wow that's negative talk from a BMW fanboi)

Has anyone used RLI oils here? I read about it on the Bob forum from the link on the OP, and there seems to be a big cult around this oil. It is worth it? Or are people planning to stick with the stock Castrol 5W30?

It's a small company that hardly anyone outside of the uber-oil-geek circle would know about. I like what I've heard about them and would consider using their products in my vehicle.

Because of the wide following Mike Miller has enjoyed for many years (Tech Talk column in the Roundel), his views on oil & oil changes might be legitimately considered ‘data’:

“I agree with your concerns [regarding recommended 15,000 mile oil changes in a 330Ci] and I would add that the cars you’ve looked at didn’t get 1,200 mile break-in service, either. BMW did away with the 1,200 mile break-in service except for M cars, once they started paying for scheduled maintenance during the warranty period. This, combined with your concerns, is what caused me to order a new 2005 325Ci instead of buying a just-off-warranty BMW, which was my natural inclination…

“I don’t have anything against BMW’s current lubricants…except that they don’t change them often enough. The 5W-30 engine oil impresses me as a nod toward fuel economy and emissions over engine longevity, and I would use 5W-40 or 10W-40 instead. BMW’s Motorsport TWS 10W-60 is very interesting and impressive oil. But you are right – BMW releases no specifics on either product.

“The guys at Red Line Oil may ease your anxiety a bit, as they too project a much longer useful life for oil between changes…: ‘It depends on how you drive. If you do a lot of city driving or low speed/low frequency driving, we recommend oil changes at 7,500 miles. Vehicles that see more highway driving can go a maximum of 15,000 or 18,000 miles with an oil filter change inbetween. Modern filter technology and the latest, clean-burning fuels have reduced the solids that contaminate oil, so frequent filter changes aren’t usually necessary.’ “ Roundel, September 2007

I have used GC 0-30 before my upgraded turbo and after its dino break-in for my WRX. I have used GC for a couple of years now and I can say it's done very well at pretty heavily modified boost levels.

Panicked a little while back when my local autozone stopped carrying it, but it seems to be back well stocked lately.

Just did a 7.5K change on the Mini Cooper S with the GC. Still enough leftover for the 1200 mile break-in change on the 135i.

I used Amsoil in my STi from 9500 miles on and it was definitely worth it. That sucker ran smooth as butter, never burned oil and dynoed higher than any other stock STi did on the same dyno. I actually got numbers close to some of the tuned guys did the same day we did the dyno run. That made them happy.

Which oils are approved for warranty, I heard Amsoil is not approved?
