Also, look at the X5m/x6m engine. It's a twinscroll twin turbo, that's why may be a solution is a triplescroll, twin turbo. All very speculative.
Can you give some more info on this "smaller and larger turbo" in one housing turbo?

I went to Honeywells website but all I could find was the VNT info, which makes reference to having the effect of a smaller and larger turbo.

I have an idea for a turbo that is truly a 2 in 1 turbo, but I'd like to know what Honeywell has, cause it might be what I've got.
If not, I'd like to propose it to them.

Thanks.

I agree the 1 doesn't deliver the whole promise, the suspension being the real issue.
Besides, when has marketing ever been done by engineers?
It's done to entice and gain interest in the hopes of selling units.
I think it did it's job quite well.

As far throttle response, that's just one factor in a long list of factors that affect a cars performance. We have yet to see and feel what has been done, or what can be done with the N55 and with it in the hands of the M division.
The throttle is just one factor, but it's an important one. I am not saying it defines the M experience by any means. Merely that history is squarely against BMW on this. If they can make it as responsive, predictable, and appealing overall as an 8000 rpm screamer, then it will be a small miracle.

I really like your postings dude We really need more sane heads like yourself. I totally agree with you when you said the guys bashing M turbos now will be buying the exact cars they are bashing now and calling it the best thing since slice bread. I have tons of faith in the big brains in M. I used to be a hard core NA fan, but owning the 135i now has opened my eyes to the potential of turbo charging. The M1 needs to seriously loose some weight up front if it is to be a proper track car. I drive my wife's 130i hatch and that thing is so much more responsive to direction changes even with inferior suspension compared to my 135i.

If the M1 is released with 360 bhp, it would be a waste of time. It needs to be at least as fast in the straights as the E92 M3. I am certainly trading in my 135i for it if so.

I can't stop thinking of the McLaren MP4-12C 3.8 litre twin turbo V8 producing 600 bhp with a redline of 8000rpm. Now that's something interesting...

Can't find it anymore - it used to come up pretty much on the first page of google when search for twin scroll turbo when I was doing the research on twinscroll when the M1 engine thread first started. It was a Garrett's which is now honeywell. Looks like there are other forms of Twinscroll as well, one with a smaller scroll, and a larger scroll where the smaller scroll is open all the time and the larger scroll opens only at high rpm. And, of course the twinscroll we all know which connects up to different cylinders to better handle the pulses.

Wow, good catch. That definitely looks like the bumper vents.

Sorry, Obi-wan...

Those vents are probably just cosmeticm though I'd like to think they are aero functional.

Here's the reasoning behind the vents according to BMW insider Scott

Quote:
Because the rear wings of the car appear more muscular due to the width of the rear track. The designers incorporated the rear vents similar in appearance to what is featured on the X5 and X6 M models to help break up the heaviness of the rear bumper which made the car look too bulky at the rear.
Scott mentioned these vents back in February. Now that we see that these are there (essentially confirming what he had said), I think we can trust what Scott is saying.

I think the following to me confirms that this is an M car:
  1. The test mule has rear vents (as revealed by Scott two months ago)
  2. The test mule has an M-differential
  3. The test mule has M3 rear camber arms

Would BMW put all of this into a 135is? I doubt it. This is an M1.

Chris,

Great catch but Look even closer. Your purple highlight looks like only half of them! It goes up much further up and rounding out a bit a couple inches from the crease in the bumper. Take a quick peek.

I think you're right. Check out this avatar Scott posted some time ago:

Precisely. It actually looks like the bottom right quarter of the whole thing. You can see the camoflage above not line up properly in the upper right quarter and Marvin's arrow is pointing to the left, bottom quarter dent in the camo.

And this makes sense since Scott's photo above appears to have the fins/vents extend further left towards the rear quarter panel, close to the tire well--and there looks to be something above Scott's obvious vent.

My only point with finding this was to give more credibility to Scott. This is a M1!
