how long to reach 160 degrees?

I've got a JB4 tuner chip in my new 08 135i. The "tune" is bypassed until the car hits 160 degrees. At 160, the blinkers flash to tell you the tune is engaged. I live near Sacramento, so the temps are pretty mild (mid 60's last week). I drive 3 miles on back roads, then 3 more miles on the freeway before the car his 160 and the tune kicks in. The temp gauge on the dash doesn't really move until about the same time the tune kicks in.

Is it normal to take this long to get up to temp? I'm concerned that maybe my thermostat is not working properly- or is a thermostat old school and everything on this car is activated by computer?

Thanks!

160 degree oil temp, or 160 degree coolant temp? It takes a LOT longer for the oil to warm up than the coolant. Coolant temp is electronically controlled (and these cars warm the coolant FAST), oil temp is not. If your coolant was slow to warm up, the computer would let you know it in no uncertain terms. BTDT even with ye olde mechanical thermostats and ODBII.

It's probably 160F oil temperature as oil temperature is MUCH more important than coolant temperature for determining when you can start pushing an engine.

It takes 5 minutes or so for the engine oil to warm up enough to do the 'Check Oil level' function using the electronic dipstick. I'd say everything is about normal.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess that the JB4 flashing light thing happens at the same time the oil level sensor is readable using the left hand stalk OBD. Both are probably based on the 160 temp warm up

It can take a LONG time for the oil to warm up when cold. I have seen it take almost 2 hours of highway driving for the oil to get up to temp when significantly below freezing.
