THAT really help with some of the rear end "wandering" but the front toe changes at high speed was still there.

I still think the harder bushing material on the M3 control arms and thrust rods might help eliminate that wobble or toe change at high speeds. Well see.

MightyMouseTech it's funny you say this... because I have been out, driving the Alps with some friends.

Just today the TRW tie rods came in the mail. I still need a boot crimping tool to arrive as well as a 38mm open wrench. I might just use a BIG crescent wrench for the inner tie rods. I also had to order a tie rod puller since one is rusted in place(I think). I also have some new BMW hardware coming in soon. IF all goes well... I should have the front suspension done in two weeks or so.

Last month I installed the rear (upper)M3 tension rods, four Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs and Dinan camber plates. The car really handles well and understeer is gone. The bump steer from the rear suspension is also gone. I think that was those old links in the rear - changing the toe when hitting a bump.

Two weeks ago I drove the Alps with some Euro 1Addicts friends. It's our yearly ritual. Driving thru Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. It was awesome.

I drove about 2,300 kms, so the suspension has settled some. Once I install the tie rods in a few weeks... I will have a proper alignment done. I will keep you guys a breasted.

Here are a few pics...

I almost forgot... here are some fotos of the TRW tie rods. I only took pics of one of them.

I am a bit curious WHY they supplied two different types of nuts for the outter tie rods. I am pretty sure my car has the regular nut not the one with a floating or rotating collar. ANy advice MightyMouseTech ???

Btw... I would LOVE to replace the rear toe arms with ///M ones... but as we know the M ones are too short. I was thinking maybe I could fine another M car that uses a longer link that would fit on a 135i... but so far I have had no luck.

My first thought was to look on an M2 or M3(F80) but they have a totally different rear suspension. Any ideas guys?

Thanks.

I'm totally jealous. That trip looked amazing with some incredible roads. I've got a well sorted great handling car with no good roads to enjoy it on

Maybe adjustable toe arms with dual ball joint ? You can find them cheap enough.

Also make sure you have a new nut, #3 in the above illustration. Most new shock kits come with one. My Bilstein's came with new ones.

They look good in the box!

I still have not installed them yet! First, I ordered an air compressor and air hammer. The air hammer took almost a month to come from Amazon(China). I needed an air hammer and tie rod/ball joint press bc one of the tie rods is frozen(rusted) in place. The air hammer arrived last week, but then my daily, my e39 540i 6sp, died on me last week. Fuel pump quit on a HOT 104'F day here in Germany. Not fun. My e39 is back up and running... so I should be able to tackle the HD tie rods and M3 front end bits soon. Maybe next week!

Oh man. Sweet 5er. Sorry to hear about the fuel pump. Down here in the southeast I sympathize with you on hot weather auto trouble.

Wondering if I should have my shop do my tie rods while my 1er is in for remediation.

Yeah, I would say replace them. I removed one of the tie rods at the hub... while there was no play the ball joint moved quite easily. Its time. Get the HD tie rods IF you can.

When installing my suspension I also replaced the sway bar end links and some of the control arms like the rear toe arm links(out of stamped steel)... all that stuff was worn at 100K miles. Not loose... but worn. So you know the saying... "while I am in there..." I replaced all that stuff. It truly is a rabbit hole.

I will post an update in this thread when I install my front M3 control arm bits & tie rods.
