Manually Resetting Oil Service Indicator on 1er with Nav
So I had a valve cover leaking at 72,500 miles which was corrected. I lost a lot of oil so they ended up doing a full oil change. They forgot to reset my Oil indicator warning because at 76,000 miles it started yelling at me that I was past due. I went to the dealer and told one of the greeter/low-level techs that I had my oil changed at 72,500 miles and that I need my oil indicator reset since I obviously have not driven 10,000 miles since the last change (Still under warranty, so I must abide by the 10K oil rule).
Side note- I have ALWAYS had pretty poor experiences with BMW of Austin, TX and this was just one more to add to the list... I left work during my hour long lunch and drove 15/20 minutes to the dealer, told the guy my problem and asked him to reset it. After a few minutes he asked me to go wait in the lounge. THIRTY MINUTES LATER he finally returns and says that he reset it and that it took so long because he forgot how to do it for that model and then actually laughed... Great, now I'm really late. I then go up to the car with him and ask if he reset it to indicate the correct number of miles left and he said no then just stood there staring at me. I then asked him if he is only able to do a full reset and not change the number of interval miles. He told me that, yes, he could only do a full reset. Oh well, I'll just manually keep track of the miles, at least it'll stop dinging at me about being overdue. I check my CBS menu and it says 11,000 miles till the next oil change? It has NEVER said over 10K before? I have a feeling there is a way to change the interval miles and that he accidentally did, without even knowing it's possible. How can I fix this once and for all to indicate the correct number of miles to go before the next oil change? |

I don't believe the distance can be set incrementally. Via coding you can change the service interval under CBS (conditions based service), but you would need to change it back to whatever "normal" value you want to use at the next oil change.
Generically, resetting the service interval just zeros the counter to start the interval set in the CBS. I did my first DIY oil change 2 weeks and it worked like a charm. I myself decided to start doing my own oil changes due to a bad experience at BMW of Austin. After going there for years I experienced a change in everyone from sales to service(after Penske acquired them). They still did good work but alway missed a minor details that irked me. Then they got all these kids running around there which are very nice and friendly but miss stuff like when i say "no wash" they still wash it. I can change my oil at home on a Sunday in less than an hour, no more missing half a work day for a oil change.

To reset: I will try to list the steps from memory so plz don't get ticked if I miss a step......LOL
1. Turn ignition ON, not start engine 2. Depress the mileage reset button, far left of speedometer gauge 3. When you see the Oil icon reset, Stop 4. Use the BC button lever by turn signal until you get to oil reset, press it again to reset Go slow as you press through the reset at first......Good luck Here is a link with PICS to Dackelone DIY oil reset......THX DACK http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7762695 Last edited by Ngo135is; 07-26-2017 at 12:49 AM.. |
