When is it a good time to change Ignition coils, preventively speaking?

I've heard several times that they should be evaluated and probably replaced every 30k. Coming from any other auto that sounds insane, but it's BMW so

I'd second the comment about misfires. I'm 61,000 miles, MHD stage 2+, original coils, and no mis-fires yet. If/when I start getting misfires I'll just replace all 6 at once.
