1st gear on a 135

Hello!

OKm i finally got my 135 on Friday. I am very confused about how hard if at all, I can drive it as its brand new...? Anyone know whats best?

ALSO, 1st gear has no power at all...is this normal????

Yes, that is normal. In a 135i you cannot use 1st gear. Try 2nd gear, any better?

Yes, 2nd and 3rd etc are amazing, they throw you back in your seat. BUT 1st does nothing really....

what do you mean 1st has nothing? It should pull so hard the tires will spin and traction control will cut your throttle

Try pressing the "DTC" button first.

If you're accelerating hard in 1st gear in the default traction control mode, it's probably limiting your power due to wheelspin (particularly if it's cold).

However if the car is brand new, maybe you shouldn't do that at all, at least until the break-in period is over.

Read your owners manual. But if you want the cliffs version... stay under 4500rpm for 1200 miles.

My CA told me with his German accent, "keep it under 160 kilomters per hour for at least a tousand kilometers and do not allow the engine to reach redline." This was when I took delivery in Germany.

Crap....yes it is brand new, had about 35miles on the clock when I picked it up Friday.

I have been told different things by different people, some say run it by being carful for 1000miles. Others said you need to rev it to run it in....

Hmmmm

Vary the revs, but keep them under 5000. A short burst to 6000 every once in a while for a second or two. When freeway driving shift gears evry minute or so from 6th to 5th to 4th to keep the revs changing. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle through the gears.

It is your car, drive it as you want to. ThYou can follow the manual, or you can drive it like you stole it. Over the years I have done both, and never had a problem. Now however, I follow the manual because I am getting old.

My car (with MT) also feels like it has no power in 1st gear unless I give it 50+% throttle (which then gives me wheel spin). I wish there was a happy medium :/

Dang, I get wheel spin all the way thru 3rd gear...
Must be nice to only have it in 1st.

This has been discussed before and everyone will have a different opinion. I just went with what the designer/builder of the car said which is in the book.

You cannot really go wrong then can you??

Spot on...thats just link mine! I guess thats just how it is.

It might be as im used to a 5 spead gearbox, so with six the powers more spread out.

FYI, its a manuel.

Drive it the way you want, but as for me, I'd rather be safe then sorry. under 4000 rmps for a good 1000 - 2000 miles. Don't drive in cruise control for long periods of time. Vary the rpm range. Don't drive it like I stole it.

All you guys who think this car doesn't have any power in first gear are confused. The engine produces the same amount of power no matter what gear you're in. The lower gear ratios produce more power/torque to the rear wheels, so there is always more power in first gear than any other. If the car isn't accellerating it's because one of two things is happening:

A) The tires are spinning
B) The tires started to spin and the traction/stability control has stepped in and cut the throttle

The one's who are spinning the tires well into second gear (and some of you in third), you're either on winter tires, or it's time for a new set. I'm on all seasons right now, running catless DPs and a JB3 and have no problem with the car spinning in second gear when it's not freezing cold outside.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm curious as to which A/S tires you're running & how have they coped with snow? (We get so little snow in my area that I'm thinking about foregoing the bi-annual switchover on my E46 and running a good set of A/S tires year round.)
