There is a very big difference between M1 Coupé and Z4 M Coupé. In the Z you sit much lower, the car is much lower, there are only two seats and a very small boot.

No new news here...

Scott has already told us the car would be available in the US-Summer of 2011, and the car would not be named M1.

Nice to hear it from Dr. Kay Segler nevertheless.

I just read the original interview in german. The fact that its not being called M1 was a note by the "auto news" magazine. Mr. Segler didn't deny nor confirm the name. He just said there will be an M version based on the actual 135i.
Auto news added the line that they can't imagine it will be called M1.

If I were to buy this car

I would immediately rebadge it. It is an M1.

The younger generation (that this car is supposedly marketed to) has no allegiance to the supercar.

But just for a second. How is it that people get all up in arms when a 1 series is rumored to be called M1 but these same people are totally cool with the same 1 series based car being called M Coupe. Isnt M Coupe reserved for Zeds?

You cant have it both ways. Either you are behind the principle that reusing a past name for a past car on a current model is wrong or its right.
The difference I believe is that the M1 was a legend. The Z4 M coupe, not so much. (But still a great car.) There is a clear difference between a retired number for a team/brand and just a number some other player use to wear.

In the NHL, there is only 1 Official League wide retired number. Even though many other numbers are synonymous with great players, it simply isn't of the same magnitude. This analogy could also be brought down to a per team level. But the semantics behind it are the same.

All things are not equal in this regard.

Dr. Kay Segler did not say it won't be called M1, so I think I am right when I say it will be called M1 Coupé and M1 Convertible.

It will be called the M Coupe.

1///M is too goofy, although they have done that with the X5 and X6. Difference is the 1 is known to have a number after it where X6 and X5 arent.

Maybe M1 Turbo? It would differentiate between the old M1 and the new M1 new. Plus the next generation will also have a turbo? Plus it is kind of like 2002 turbo? Who knows....

It doesn't matter whether the younger generation has any allegiance to the original M1 or not. The original M1 is still a legendary car to BMW, which carries historical significance for the company. Hence the analogy to retiring the jersey number. Just because this car is a 1 series built by the M Division doesn't mean it is an M1 by default. It's possible, as some people have suggested, that it could be called the M2, establishing the 2 series as there have been rumors of the next 1 series becoming FWD.

Not an M1 like I posted months ago. It's a collectors car according to BMW that will surely cost 55k+! Seriously, a car that much better look good and this vehicle is POLARIZING.

Come on. The oner should be a light weight 4 banger turbo in the 25k-35k range.

It should have been the 2-series from the start...would've abated much of the criticism and stigma of "only a 1-series" from the higher end model owners.

I'd say M2 it should be.

www.miniusa.com

For the rest of the world, there's the 1er 3 and 5 door models.

As for an M version of the 1er being a collectors car, best of luck. There are 2,601 total Z3 S54 M Coupes in the world, and they're not exactly appreciating, much as Z4 M Coupes aren't either.

I'm going to go with 135M. I know it sounds weird when you say it, but its the simplest way to put it. Although we all know BMW has never been known for simple nameplates, lol.

I'm really glad they are not going to call it the M1, I dont think this car deserves that title. Time to officially retire it, until BMW finally gets off their lazy asses and builds a real supercar.

While that would be sweet and maybe possible with the next 1 series, I'm not sure what BMW NA would think of a car like that in their lineup. We will see some turbo 4 cylinders come our way from BMW, but I doubt we'll see anything with a starting price in the mid 20's from BMW NA.
