Removing wheel weights paint issue
I recently had a tire replaced at the local dealer after I found a screw in the tire. Yesterday when I was washing the car I noticed that there is some damage to the paint on the wheel where the mechanic pulled off the stick-on weights. Maybe the paint came off with the glue? Should I ask the dealer to pay for a new wheel or is this type of damage unavoidable?

Normally I see them use a plastic wedge to pry the old ones off. Even then or by any other means, if the adhesive on the weights actually pulled off paint, sounds like the paint wasn't on very well to begin with. I can't see a way in which that particular shop could be held liable for anything either way. Now if you saw sharp edged screwdriver marks, then I'd be pissed, otherwise - not much you can do about it.

On these wheels, the weights should be the type that stick on the back, of the wheel, not the front. Whatever shop stuck weights on the front should be avoided in the future. Always check before you go to a wheel shop if they use the right equipment.

As pointed out above, they usually can be removed without damaging finish using a heat gun. Alternatively, something like Oil-Flo solvent can be used. Neil |

In the original post there's no mention of the weight being on the outer part of the wheel. I assumed it was a weight stuck to the inside. Can you clarify Ajshanny?
