Tax return $ coming. What to buy?:)
Here's my situation.
I just bought BMW performance exhaust and love it. My plan is to get Cobb tuner by summer, but before then I figure I should get the other bolt ons. I currently have BMS intake, BMW PE and that's it. Should I get an FMIC, DP, and charge pipe BEFORE I get the cobb tuner? If so, which should I buy next? Ciao JK

N54 or N55 ?
FMIC is nice to have. Maybe a SSK if you have a manual or DCV delet are great mods. Personally I would not do the dp's -I'm not a fan. I would just wait and buy the tune - when you can.

N55 manual. I have about $1000. So I can get the tune. I have just heard that you will need the charge pipe first, DPs, and FMIC in order for your car to handle the tune. I'd rather be safe and mod in a sequence that protects my car. But I haven't talked to too many people. That's just from a little research on here, what I've found. JK

Buy an FMIC and charge pipe combo from the forums. Then save up for a tune. JB4 or Cobb will work fine. You won't regret the FMIC one bit once you get into those Texas sized summers. Any FMIC does a 1000x better job of dealing with heatsoak. Pretty easy to install the FMIC too. Did mine on a set of ramps.

I claim 0, so I pay a lot in taxes...kind of use it as a savings account. Plus I have a dependant, own, and go to school part time.

You don't want to get a tax refund or at least not one that's sizeable. Without saying more and derailing this thread, it's better fiscally to never give the government a zero interest loan which is what a tax refund is.

You're giving the government a 0% loan. There are better ways to save. Claim a few exemptions and put a few extra percent in an IRA.

I was gonna get an LSD with mine, but bought CCW Classics instead..
I definitely recommend a chargepipe and intercooler though.

Op: as most have mentioned, FMIC and charge pipe would be great mods to get your motor ready for a tune. Catless dp is another good mod. I picked up a used catless downpipe from a forum member for 250 and noticed a nice power bump. However, it will definitely make your exhaust louder so keep that in mind. As far as tunes go, the cobb accessport has worked out well for me. Down the road you can get a custom tune for your car that will give you a nice power bump as well. I have the etune from pro tuning freaks and it made a big difference compared to the cobb OTS map. My personal order of mods was: dp, accesport (to take advantage of my mods as I added them), drop in afe filter, FMIC, chargepipe, ptf etune. I have a bms intake I am going to try out in the near future as well. |

Oh man, too many options.
With OpenFlash available, I wouldn't go for the CobbAP. If doing any more than a tune in the power dept, I would get the CP and FMIC with it all. Personally, if I were to do it all again, I'd start with suspension, then the rest whenever.
