N55 Turbo Upgrade Options
Yes I have searched, and I know there are options from the following vendors:
Pure Turbo VTT Steam Turbo Big Boost So my goal is an honest, reliable and consistent 400whp. I would also like the power to pull in the higher rpm range than stock. This would be on 93 octane. This setup also must handle tracks days however it can be de-tuned if needed. Turbo replacements seem to come in two flavors. 1, where the manifold and turbo housing stay and only the compressor and turbine wheel are replaced. 2, where the entire turbo frame and manifold are replaced. Typically it seems most "stage 1" turbos are the first type and all "stage 2" or higher are the second type. So here are my questions: How do the two types compare regarding installation difficulty? How much time is saved by going with just the type 1? How much HP will the stock fuel system support? Will the type/stage 1 type turbo replacements fulfill my hp goals? Finally, what option would you go with and why? Thanks, |

Well you know my opinion from your other thread, my mods are:
Pure stage 2 Pure inlet pipe ER intercooler ER charge pipe VRSF down pipe BMW Performance exhaust ****** cat sim Fuel it stage 2 fuel pump MHD tuner w/ wedge 93 octane flash Car pulls hard nicely all the way to red line... honestly if your going to go through the trouble, might as well go all the way with the stage 2... pure has a great track record for reliability as well. Also I highly recommend wedge Tuning on mhd, car never ran right with jb4. |

I would highly recommend Wedge as a tuner also, he had my car running great after only a few revisions. I worked with other tuners and also tried the JB4/backend flash route and the car was never right. |

Searching on the E90 forums, there does not seem to be too much love for the type/stage 1 turbo upgrades. Pretty much everyone says go right to stage 2.
How much HP can the stock fuel system support? |

stage 1 is what the should have had from the factory. pulls hard to redline, and really opens up the car for a good 30whp more throughout the band.
people say to go straight to stage 2 because you'll get power hungry and want more. I had stage 2 in my 135 and loved it. but I had meth. stock fuel system (only 93) will run you into 450ish whp range. expect to add supplemental fuel after that if you're looking to keep things working right. I had meth in my car (kit still for sale )

Our 2 most popular options are Pure and Vargas.
We never had an issue with either one

It does not require any supporting mods.

It does not require a retune, of course if you go with a more aggressive tune (jb4 or Flash) you will make more power.

I went with the Stage 1 pure turbo and I have no complaints. I also have the ppk flash works fine without jb4. But with some e85 and custom map 6 the car transforms.
I would suggest you get a Stage 2 because now I’m craving more power but pure doesn’t give you credit towards your Stage 2 purchase anymore if you have a Stage 1. Didn’t find that out until I was ready to upgrade. |
