N51 Intake Boot

I’m installing the Turner silicone boot, and the stock accordion-looking boot has a box on the bottom but no sensors or anything. What does it do? I assumed designed to catch water or other debris that may have made it past the filter but I have no idea really. Is it needed?

It's a resonator that tones down the sound of the intake. No other function, delete as you see fit.

Deleted! At first the Turner boot seemed slightly too short but after looking at the stock boot and the intake manifold, the Turner one fits perfectly. Car is still in pieces so can’t comment on how well it runs just yet.

I purchased the Turner intake tube for my 128 because I was looking for some additional intake noise under acceleration, but that turns out not to be the case with this mod. I can detect no change of induction sound. While it does look good as an add-on, I can't recommend this $60 purchase....

Hmm, try deleting your activated charcoal filter in your airbox. It's a good muffler of noise, and restricts airflow a tiny bit.

Don't worry about the air not getting clean enough; it's only there to contain vapors and fumes from the engine after shutoff, because environmentalists...

P.S. It's the filter that is integrated into the box on the side of the MAF sensor...

Good luck, sorry that you didn't have a great initial experience!

I'll take a look for the charcoal filter and consider a delete. There's times where I miss the noise from my old e36 with the CAI. Was trying to recreate with the e88.

I'll also be doing a DIY on my spaced intake box, it really pumps-up the induction noise of the engine (it has that wonderful, race-y intake scream at the mid range and top end). Relatively civilized at low loads and highway speeds, too...
