Whelp,

The shop called around 4pm and let me know they are not capable of doing the job. So I am picking it up tomorrow and attempting to get it done at another local shop that specializes in German/Swedish cars.

I spoke to the owner of the new shop and let him know my predicament and asked him if they are capable of handling this. He said sure. He said it will cost a little more because of the extra labor involved.

I will definitely check the condition of my wheels before I head over to another shop. I am just furious. But I do have to say, they have been great in communicating with me. They have been very empathetic. I also appreciate their being cautious too. And giving me a loaner for 5+ days.

Thanks guys for all the support,
miiipilot

Clearly this shop isn't equipped to mount these tires as it's an hour job with the proper equipment which would not endanger the wheel. They don't have the proper equipment for sure and they are attempting to "make do" without it which can lead to disaster and may have already done so with the story about the owner being out of town until Wed. blah, blah, blah.
What he said. I've done tires myself (with an experienced bud to help) on several occasions, and if you have an old school mounting machine, it's VERY easy to damage large diameter wheels with low profile tires. Ask me how I know.
If they gave you a loaner and communicated well with you, I wouldn't be upset that they erred on the side of caution... unless they already tried and mangled a rim and are trying to save face. So just do a spot check when you get there.

I am totally happy with their customer service. They were very empathetic and expressed, IMO, genuine concern. I am just furious at the situation. I just wanna get my tires on LOL

I would recommend them at this point for other services.

Damn this just sucks. Why is that shop recommended??

Hang in there man, you'll have your car back WITH the tires changed soon. It always seems to take forever when your car's in the shop or something. I haven't had mine for over a week, so I know the feeling.

That tire size definitely fits, as others have said. Check the car for any damage when you get it back, and good luck with the new place. The swap should be fast enough that you really shouldn't even need a loaner.

For the best results, pick a shop that does a lot of low profile (below 40 series) tyres and uses a back mounting machine, so the bead breaker never touches the outside face of the wheel.

Got an appointment at 11am Friday at a diffferent shop. Spoke to owner there and was very agreeable. I told him all the particulars. Told him about the RFT removals and installing 10mm up with 35/40 profiles. He responded, "Oh yeah, most people go up a bit. Not a problem. Our machine can handle the lower profiles." etc etc.

I did stop by another TR recommended installer, b/c I am currently toting around my brand new tires in the backseat and trunk, and thought maybe they'd have an opening...NOPE!!!!!!!! They took my number and said we will call you if we have a cancelation. Other than that, They are scheduling into January. FML

Gonna call the dealer next, just in case I have no other option.

I did check the conditions of my rim and there was no gouges or scratches. It was clean though...unlike all the other wheels. Hmmmmm Would they wash my wheel before mounting new tires? Is that common?

Thanks again all,
miiipilot

Called the dealer and they said they can do it. I wasn't sure if they would because I am going up 10mm on both front and rear from OE size spec and to a non RFT tire. However the price is now $160+. At this point I don't care lol I'm still gonna try that different local shop 1st. Just needed a backup plan too.

^^^ That is a rip off. I just paid $50 to get my summers taken off winters installed and balanced. This is my local guy that I've been using for years, and I go through tires often at least a set a year. I always tip the guy $20 so out the door I was out $70 with him trashing the tires for me as my Star Spec were done.

Damn.. I got 225/255 star-specs installed at a crappy looking Car-X with zero issues. Well, except they ended up scratching/denting my fender while it was in the shop, but that's another story.

Here's the update...

Was at the shop for @3hrs...Mission accomplished!!!

They were also very nice. I would recommend them as well. They put about 15 miles on the test drive since they were kind of concerned that these are 10mm up. He said everything checked out and, "It's a nice car!"

We chit-chatted a while about some suspension ideas.

Price: $149 They even put my old tires in bags and put them back into the car.

So far (Only 25 miles driven)...WOW what a difference in ride. I don't feel like I'm driving a radio flyer wagon with no suspension. F those RFTs!!! I swear those RFTs ruin, absolutely RUIN the driving experience. I will def keep you posted on the snow worthyness of the Pilot A/S Plus too.

THANKS AGAIN ALL,
miiipilot

Yea, I did not do a walk around with the manager and only when I got home found a big scratch on a rim. I planned to use the OEM rims for winter tires, so I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Grrrrrrrrrrr! Buyer beware!

225 is a race setup . . . sheesh.

I found a place that will mount (no balance . . . for autocross) tires for $7 cash money. Never paying $30 a wheel again.

Also, I after having tire shops over torque and cross thread every bolt on my old car and then having a shop I trust torque down the bolts on the 1 so hard that I had to use the 6' extension handle for my floor jack to break the bolts, I now refuse to let anyone but myself mount the tires on the car.

I just drop off loose tires and rims and let them do their thing.
