135i Long first Crank
I recently (6 months ago) bought 2009 E88 with only 15 600 miles which has just started having a long first crank. I have read a few things about the HPFP although most say that the car will display other alarms on the dash. I have the long first crank but no other symptoms or alarms although there is a slight rough idle. its been doing it for about 2 weeks with not much increase in problems.
I have taken it to a dealer for a check and they say the fuel pump pressure is normal although they need to update the firmware on the engine controller to get further diagnostics, they said it would take 4 to 5 hours to do the firmware upgrade as the current version is from 2008. Is this normal operation or should I just get the HPFP replaced before it goes. Its not free in Australia to have it replaced. Also I noticed that they filled the windscreen washer bottle appeared to be very full, the next day I noticed water was leaking from a panel near the front door hinge. Is this normal for washer bottle to get hot from engine. expand and release water somehow, I noticed the level has not dropped, its still full. Thanks for your responses |

In my specific case, I had similar problems over the course of about two months. The long cranks got worse and worse and on a few occasions the car didn't start. I didn't, however, experience any hesitation, rough idle, or codes thrown.
I brought it in for a HPFP test (negative, so no replacement) and from that day on the problem, with a few exceptions, vanished. No problems at all in the last few thousand miles. It might have been a bad tank of gas, I have no idea. In any case, there's always the chance that it's *not* your HPFP, despite its reputation. |

You do not necessarily get an engine code with a bad HPFP.
First thing i would do is check the fuel pump then check your injectors.

Check for a sticking injector. When the car starts look for a puff of white smoke from the exhaust pipe.

Hi just a quick note, apology for the delay as I have been travelling.
I had the HPFP replaced with the latest model and the problem is definitely fixed, cost me A$800 as I got a good deal on the pump from a dealer and had it fitted somewhere else. The car is running really well. I am now looking for a tuner I have been considering the COBB and Burger JB4. Are there suggestions from users. Cheers Len |
