Tires that will "hook" on the street
So I went to 17s on my car and I am currently on 255/40 Potenza RE-11s. While these tire perform great on a road racing course they have almost no grip during fast acceleration 1st through 3rd on the street or the dragstrip. At the dragstrip I have yet to go under a 2.1 60' and a more common one is a 2.3-2.4. The burn out makes them even worse as the tire gets hot and the sidewall stiffens I would spin 1-3 on the strip let off completely hit it in 3rd again and keep spinning.
This sucks for me on the street because I cant gun it from a stop or even a low gear without spinning like crazy. I know they don't make many tires in that size 255/40R17 but I might be willing to go down to a 245 if someone can reccomend one that will make the car hook on the street. I'm not looking for a drag radial, but I'm not looking for a continental either, just a tire that will hook on the street. Any input is appreciated. Yah I realize that and that will be my next modification but that cost $4000 and will require some saving but if i could get a set of rear tires for $300 that would help me out a lot.

To be honest, with the power of your 1-Series and the narrow tires that are on that car, even a drag slick will spin under 1st through 2nd gear power shifts. This is just an inevitable circumstance with the power the car has and the width of the tires that the vehicle permits.
The differential is definitely a great investment to reduce wheel spin under launches and offer additional grip under drag or road course circumstances. -Charles@VMRWheels

You need an r-compound or semi-drag tire if you want a tire that will hook better then the RE-11 in that size.
The other option is to run a wheel that allows for wider rubber. The 18x9.5" ARC-8's allow for 275/35/18 tires and with a roll you can fit a 285. At 18.2lbs. it lighter then most 17's on the market. The diff is definitely important if you care about drag times, but even a 255 tire will be limited once you get a diff. Quote:

I have RE-11's but with the power your car is putting down and the small tyre width it's no surprise you're spinning. I'd get an LSD or go wider.

the widest rear I've seen is 285 in 18" on the 1series. With a diff, you're still likely to spin in 1st and 2nd with all those power mods.
Why would it cost $4000 to get a diff? You planning on getting the 3.46 rear gear for a manual car? |

You're never going to "hook" on the street, it's not a prepped surface.
R Compounds have very stiff sidewalls so they aren't going to hook. Drag radials with the tallest possible sidewall will hook better than anything else. The tallest and widest possible drag radials is the answer to your question, but then again, save it for the drag strip. For the street you want good street radials, surely?
