The company I bought it from took them back, and now I need to re-think if the mirror mod is worth it.

Next the wheels. Some have seen this already but let me say it again for anyone doing the conversion, the rear axle is wider on the 135i then it is on the 1m or m3 by about 10 mm per side.

I had picked up a beautiful set of 18" BC mono-forged wheels, 9.5 et 20 10.5 et 25. The front work perfect with 265 but the rear sticks out just too much. 10.5 will easily fit as will 285 + width, but the offsets will have to be in the et 35 to 40 range.

So it looks like I'm going to have to sell these
Idk if your interested or have thought about it but you can do a rear hub conversion from a 130i and loose 10mm offset.
609 w/free shipping. You could keep those gorgeous wheels...

Just food for thought

You could save the wheels and do a 1M rear end conversion down the road. You can find subframes and M3 diffs on eBay for relatively good prices.

interesting option, but what does that mean for the caliper and parking brakes?

So, this is my low-cost approach to going widebody. Minus all the suspension work I had done before the cost of this is significantly less then the other approaches I considered and less then half the cost of the replace the rear quarter panels approach. Between doing much of the work myself, modifying parts to work, spending over 18 months price shopping and collecting new and used 1M parts, finding a good shop to paint, and selling off my old parts, I'm in for less the 6K for the widebody conversion, and that's with no insurance help or sponsors.

Before I decided to do it I had already installed a Wavetrac, updated the suspension parts and upgraded the SFB's. I've driven M3's and found the difference between this set up and the M3/1M set up is very marginal, not worth the cost I think. If you are starting from scratch then I think the M3 SF swap is cheaper and better then taking my route.

There are a few guys on here going absolutely nutz on their 1M conversions and just blowing my mind. But without sponsorship, bags of money, or serious help from insurance there is no way I could spend that kind of disposable cash on a hobby.

This is for those guys out there like me, who daydream about having a widebody, have more time and skill then disposable cash and just love working on their car. In the end, it's going to be cheaper for me to sell my wheels and get ones with the correct offset.

It just changes the height or width (however you think of it of the hat of the rotor. The parking brakes are the same and the caliper requires no modification. Straight bolt on, baring the removal/pulling of the old hub and replacing the new one. What's included is a 130i rotor and hubs and new wheel bearings

A thread discussing it is here. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=975919

I track my car and want a square setup for tire rotational/wear purposes so I've been mulling it over for a while. Apparently the hubs could potentially be a bitch to remove and require heavy duty puller. Beyond that it seems genius. You retain the 135 pad options, just would need to order 130i rotors in the future. So shipping could be expensive down the road if you go through brakes enough.

It's brilliant.

Any plans to bring it out to a Bay Area event (cars & coffee, AutoX, etc)?

Would love to get a look...

Karl.

There's a BMC CCA event at Canepa (Scotts Valley, ~30 mins south of Los Gatos) on September 12th: http://ggcbmwcca.org/event/canepa-design-tour/

If you haven't been there before they have an astounding collection of cars, well worth a trip down.

I think they have an actual M1 tucked away on a shelf in the back...

Karl.

Car got whacked last night so looking into this if I can make the numbers work.

Do you happen to remember how far from the edge of the fender your cuts were on the M rear quarter? I remember you said there was a 3/8" overlay, right? Going to have a body shop do it for me, and want to walk in with as much info as I can.

Thanks in advance.

You just go out into the flat portion and you will be fine, it varies but between 6 - 7" on the front and back and around 8" on top.
