Motor Trend Says 1M 4T

Per the March issue of Motor Trend;

"The Z4 is soon slated to get BMW's new gas direct-injection turbocharged four M Engine designed for the M version of the

Guess we"ll see...

Sounds like something they already had written up before the latest rumors broke.

I don't see any way the M1 is going to get a turbo 4. It needs to be at least 350Hp. There aren't a lot of 4 cylinders capable of making that much power, and the ones that do suffer substantially on the low end because of the relatively large turbos they need to do so.

I just don't see it happening on with this generation.

I don't see it happening either. In addition to the technical limitations, how are they going to add $10k to the price of a 3.0L I6T and give you a I4T?... from a marketing perspective

Yeah but, the I4T will be a diesel and we all know that they cost more! How is that for marketing?

Oh baby a 1M with 400 ft-lbs of torque. LOL

The Suburu WRX Si is 2 liter and is rated 302hp 311 ft. lb. So BMW could probably make a turbo 4 with 350 hp. But I don't know how they could get people to buy it rather than a 135i. It would be lighter and probably handle better but you could put a lot of mods o a 135i for the projected price difference. And then you would have equal or better handling and a 6 rather than a very highly tuned 4.

It's STi..
Japan = 2.0 twin scroll turbo.
USA = 2.5 turbo
and there is no DI yet. with DI - it's a 350hp engine easy...

I agree, I think Motor Trend got some bad info.
Doubtful they'd call it the 1M as that's out of the norm for putting the M designation first.

I actually COULD see a Turbo 4 however.
With a 2.3-2.4 liter (2.5 is pushing the "too big" size for a 4 banger and is often a bit rough at that size).
With DI and Valvetronic 345 hp is very possible.
And it would easily weigh 100 or so lbs less than a 3.0 I6 with 345 hp.

However, they'd probably only be able to ask $5-6k higher in price than the 135i. And clearly a 135i would easily be able to be modded to make more power.

I think they should save a turbo four for an upcoming 130/330/530i variant and make it the 2.3-2.4 liter with 250-260 ish hp.
Lighter, more power, and equal or better fuel economy than the current base 3.0 I6

Engine downsizing! The 135I has a 3.0L turbo six 300-Bhp and getting M-DCT so it's gonna be a rocket. Don't worry the ///M. Engineers work wonders! The new baby ///M will definitely be quicker than a 135I! I hope motor trend is wrong BMW is known for it's inline six! How about CSL S-54 under the bonnet!

For me the best engine choice for an M1 is a 6cil high rev engine with 6 throttle bodies and a nice CSL like airbox aproxx 320hp is enough.

When it has to be turbo i gonna shed a tear

But when turbo the choice of 4 banger is better. The 135i has a heavy nose you feel that. Al the extra plumbing and turbo does not bring the extra fun an ///M1 should give.

6 cil turbo has to much torque which can t be good to handle midcorner and with the shorter wheelbase of the 1 it wil be more than a handfull. I have driven a 135i with a LSD i found it no fun in cornering. To much lag. When the lag was done to much torque to handle midcorner.

When the weight is 1250 kg a 310 hp 4 cil turbo is more than enough power.

But put a 6 cil highrev engine in an M1 it will be automotive porn. Imagine a 360 hp CSL engine in 1 serie s coupe. That s sex on wheels.

4 cyl turbos can be fun! SAAB has been doing it for years. But like the OP said it didn't work from a marketing perspective.

Wasn't their an M1 concept awhile ago?

Do you really think they will name the new m-division version of the 1-series the m1 after the old super car?

I believe they shelved that plan because of the recession.

I vote for the S-54 CSL motor 360PS and a ton of fun.

Automotive porn for the track!

Guys......think reality here.

Would you invest huge sums of capital to develop a rare and unique 4 cylinder turbo for the 1 series? Especially knowing it will only have a 1 or 2 year sales lifecycle tops?

Reality is that BMW is using off the shelf parts with tweaks to build the M1. It will not have a special 4 cylinder. It will have an uprated N55. Not trying to be a downer here...but sometimes these speculations are way up in the clouds and not considering reality here.

I think they'll give the N55 a second turbo, thus becoming the N55.5

These speculations are rather close to reality...for the next gen 1 series.

WOO HOOO....Thank you Southlight! Somehow I feel vindicated now in my thought process on all this.

Sure we would all love a light weight reincarnated E30 M3. But some of us are also wise enough to recognize the limitations of corporate BMW, the timetables involved, the capital involved, etc. So when taking those factors into account, it makes sense that this will be a radical car, but built with off the shelf parts. In some ways, similar to the E30 M3.

To those that don't remember, the E30 M3 used a M6 engine lobbed down by two cylinders. It used E28 brakes. It used E28 wheel hubs and spindles. E28 ABS system with special hub rings. E24 dogleg transmission. Etc.
