Premium Stereo option - any good?

I want to hear from people who wouldn't consider themselves audiophiles ... I just want something that will sound pretty good. Anyone know the specifics for the premium option? I know it says:

Premium Hi-Fi anti-theft AM/FM stereo CD/MP3 player audio system with up graded
speakers (including 2 subwoofers), Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Radio Data System
(RDS), Auto-Store and 3-channel FM diversity antenna; displays MP3 song title and artist

But does this system exist on current models .. can someone speak about it vs the base?

Thanks,
Crowley

I think this is the relevant passage from what joelk linked to:

The base X3 sound system consists of 6 speakers. (4) 4 inch or 100mm speakers each in the door (full range not co-axial). And (2) 8 inch or 200 mm under the seat (to round out the lack of bottom end from 4 inch). The premium consists of 10, simply adds on seperate tweeters to the door mounts with additional power. The head unit is technically the same as the base.

Sounds like they both suck.

Since they don't mention Logic 7, I'll bet it's not that system. I have the upgraded Logic 7 system, and it adds DSP spacial modes, for enhanced surround sound. The system isn't bad, but it's not inteded to rival aftermarket either.

It sounds like the 1er has some else other than that...

It is not... it is similar to the DSP systems in the X3 and the Z4.

Actually, I have an X3 and the base stereo in that car is one of the best I have ever heard. Including the HK system in my buddies 330Ci...

My HK isnt that great and the CD player sounds like crap, but the dealership would never replace it, I complained every time I took it in for anything. I dont know why they wouldnt want to replace it, they would get paid and paid well as its the in-dash navigation/CD player...

Now I have DICE for my iPhone and dont care about the CD player...

I'm no help, but my buddies e90 325i (`06) had a great base system in it. I thought it was better than my HK. So if the base or upgraded 1er system is anything close, I'll be happy...

Weird, I have a base system in my E46 328i. I definitely miss the HK I had in my E36 M3. I'm surprised to hear your ZHP doesn't sound as good. I think I'm going to have to hear the 1er premium system option in person compared to the regular before deciding.

^ I use to work at a stereo shop, which might be part of the problem. Its tough to enjoy a high-end OEM system when you've heard better low-end aftermarket systems...

*shrugs*

I didnt buy the ZHP for its stereo anyway...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'd like to flesh this discussion out a bit.

My 335i had Logic7 stock. I realize now that the upgraded system in the 135i will not br the Logic7. That stereo was the best, cleanest, and loudest stock stereo I've ever had by a wide margin. It was good enough that I never even considered getting an aftermarket stereo.

I drove a 2007 loaner X3 with a CD player that said "BMW Business". It sounded like utter crap compared to the Logic7 to me. If this is the upgraded system in the 135i, its a joke and I definitely won't be plunking down $875 for it.

I want to preorder a 135i, but there are little unknowns like this that I feel will be a letdown to me. Part of me thinks I should just save a little longer and get a 335 coupe or wait until they de-ugly the front end in 2009 so it will look like the 2008 M3 sedan nose.

BAH!

Any more info on the 135i stereos would be greatly appreciated. If they are the exact systems offered in the X3, I'll take a couple CDs I like to the dealership and go audition them. Sadly, they'll sound a lot better in the X3 because they'll be more spacious in that application.

^ the face lifted 2009 e90 will NOT have the same front end as the M3 sedan...

Just FYI, it will be different from early e90's but not the same as the M3 sedan...

I added Hifi to my order today because I got idrive and it won't be easy to integrate aftermarket stereo with idrive. I can swap the speakers but who knows how good BMW amps are. I think after this I am done with ICE upgrade and focus my effort on suspensions. I had the chance to listen to logic 7 in the 08 335i today and it sounds decent over radio signal. It's no match for high end aftermarket speakers for sure but it will do.

I have been reading babybmw.net and it appears the "business" is crap and "professional" is good. My question is which of the two will the upgraded stereo be?

Whats really in there??

I want to do an aftermarket system in my 135i - but I am confused.

Can you get the base stereo system with Navigation?

Do the 8" subs under the seat come with the base system?

Do Separate tweeters come in the base system?

I think there are 4" holes on all four corners with either system

If I understand correctly, the upgrade system just adds power and tweeters???

The reason I'm interested is that I'd like to put some Dynaudio 362 Separates in the front and if all the proper holes are present in the base system - I don't need the upgraded system. Not sure if I'm going to do Navi yet though.....

Also wondering if the JL Audio Clean Sweeps sound good - if not, are there any alterntives?

I intend to do a pretty straightforward system - Dynaudio System 362, and a JL 13w7 - hopefully powered by JL's new amps HD600/4 for the Dyn's and two HD600/1's for the 13w7

Thanks for your help

Premium system adds two subs, all other speakers and power is the same. It also adds speed sensitive EQ and some DSP modes.

All that for the low low price of $800

BMW USA Catalogue states the base system has 10 speakers, seems likely it has subs also.

No need to spend the money if the car already has a decent system. Not buying the car for the audio quality. Though it would be nice to blast music and not have it all choppy and static-ee(sp?).
